25 reports of fake Google verification SMS from 02 8789 4297 (0287894297). Scammers impersonate Google, claim device login attempts in Thailand/Japan/Madrid, request callback to +61287894297.
Google Impersonation SMS Scam Reports for 02 8789 4297
Community reports show a sustained and coordinated Google impersonation campaign using 02 8789 4297 (also written as 0287894297). Twenty-five contributors have flagged SMS messages falsely claiming to be from Google, featuring fabricated verification codes and instructions to contact 0287894297 immediately. The scam is particularly convincing because the malicious SMS appears in victims' message threads alongside legitimate Google verification messages, blurring the line between real and fraudulent communications.
The geographic variation in reported device locations (Thailand, Japan, Madrid, Spain) suggests the scammers are using different scenarios to pressure victims, while the phone number 02 8789 4297 remains constant across all reports. Multiple contributors noted the text arrived with "Google" as the sender name in their contact list, making it appear authentic at first glance.
What the Fake Google Messages Say
The standard message format reported involves a Google verification code (e.g., "G-971201") paired with a claim about an unauthorised device login attempt in a foreign location. One detailed contributor account described receiving: "G-971201 is your code to connect new device in Thailand. Wasn't you? Contact +61287894297". Variations include device login attempts in Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain.
Several reports highlight the urgency tactic embedded in the message. Contributors received phrasing like "If you did not authorize this, call us immediately," designed to bypass rational thinking and trigger panic responses. One contributor who actually called back 0287894297 was greeted by someone claiming to be a British expat living in Los Angeles, who provided a fake employee ID number and attempted to convince the victim that their Gmail account was being accessed via an iPhone 7. The caller disconnected when the victim questioned how this information was obtained.
The scammers are clearly banking on victims' familiarity with legitimate Google two-factor authentication processes. Because genuine Google codes arrive via SMS under the "Google" contact name, recipients of messages from 02 8789 4297 often don't immediately question their authenticity until they examine the content more carefully or attempt to verify the claim through official channels.
Report Patterns and SMS Timing
The SMS campaign targeting 0287894297 intensified significantly in late November 2025, with cluster reports between 26 November and 3 December. One contributor reported receiving the fake Google message at 2:35 pm AEST on 26 November, consistent with business hours targeting. The fact that the same verification code variations (G-971201, G-971203) appear across multiple contributors suggests either a mass SMS broadcast or a deliberately recycled code template.
All 25 reports were submitted via SMS channel, with no phone calls reported from 02 8789 4297 itself. However, several contributors noted they were explicitly instructed to call the number back, which is a critical part of the scam's execution. Two additional reports flagged missed or answered calls from this number, described simply as "scam" and warning others not to call back, indicating the scammers may be proactively calling victims who engaged with the SMS.
Why This Scam Works
The 02 8789 4297 Google impersonation scam is effective because it exploits legitimate security practices. Two-factor authentication via SMS is standard for Google accounts, so recipients have been trained to expect verification codes via text. The scammers are hijacking that expectation by either spoofing the Google sender name or using timing to bury the fraudulent message among real ones.
The callback component is crucial to the scam's mechanics. Once a victim calls 0287894297, they reach trained social engineers who use false credentials, plausible scenarios (account compromise, unauthorised device access), and manufactured urgency to extract login credentials, recovery phone numbers, or other sensitive account recovery information. The detail about the scammer slipping up and mentioning an iPhone 7 shows these operators have researched common devices and are prepared with semi-plausible technical knowledge.

Called back and guy said he was a Brit living in Los Angeles, despite me having called a NSW landline number. Gave me a fake employee ID number and then he slipped up by saying that he could investigate someone trying to hack my Gmail account using an iPhone 7. WRITE A REVIEWFrequently Asked Questions
Is 02 8789 4297 really calling from Google?
No. 02 8789 4297 (0287894297) is not a legitimate Google number. Google does not contact users asking them to call back verification codes or provide account details over the phone. The 25 community reports all confirm that 0287894297 is used by scammers impersonating Google to trick victims into sharing account access information.
What should I do if I already called 02 8789 4297 back?
Do not provide any additional information to anyone claiming to be from Google. Change your Google password immediately by logging into google.com directly (not through any link). Enable an authenticator app for two-factor authentication. Check your account recovery options (phone number and email) to ensure no scammers have added themselves as recovery contacts. If you shared sensitive information with 0287894297, consider enabling a security key for your Google account as an additional protection layer.
Why does the fake SMS from 0287894297 appear under 'Google' in my message list?
Scammers are using SMS spoofing techniques to make the message appear to come from your existing Google contact. When you receive legitimate two-factor authentication codes from Google, they arrive under the 'Google' contact name in your messages. The scammers behind 02 8789 4297 are exploiting this by sending their fraudulent message in a way that appears to belong to the same conversation thread, making it harder to spot as a fake at first glance.
I received the message about a device login in Thailand but I never authorised that. Is my account hacked?
The device location mentioned in the message from 02 8789 4297 is fabricated. Contributors reported receiving messages about logins in Thailand, Japan, and Madrid, Spain. The scammers use different geographic locations as fear tactics to pressure victims into calling back 0287894297 without thinking. The location is not real; it's part of the social engineering attack. Delete the message, do not call back, and verify your account security by logging in directly to google.com.
What happens if I click the link in the SMS from 02 8789 4297?
The SMS messages from 0287894297 reported by contributors contain callback requests to the scam phone number, not embedded hyperlinks. However, related SMS scams of this type often do include links designed to capture your login credentials on a fake Google login page. Never click links in unsolicited SMS messages claiming to be from Google. Always navigate to google.com directly in your browser or call Google's official support line to verify security alerts.
How do I report the fake Google SMS from 02 8789 4297?
Report the message to multiple Australian authorities: ACMA at acma.gov.au (Australian Communications and Media Authority handles telecom scams), Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au (government fraud tracking), your mobile provider, and Reverseau here. Forward the full SMS text including sender details and the number 0287894297 to 0429 999 888 (Australian spam reporting for SMS). Block 02 8789 4297 on your phone to prevent future contact attempts.
