NBN Impersonation Tech Support Scam Reports for 02 8766 1819
Four contributors have reported calls from 02 8766 1819 (also written as 0287661819) claiming to be from National Broadband Network Headquarters. The scammers pose as tech support staff with Indian accents, using names like "Dave Jones" or "Allan Jones" and employing aggressive intimidation tactics to convince victims their internet connection is being used for illegal activities including money laundering, online gambling, and child exploitation.
All three answered calls about 0287661819 describe the same high-pressure approach: callers claim to have detected criminal activity on the victim's internet and demand remote access to "fix" the issue by switching settings from "private to public." When challenged on inconsistencies (like stating different names), the scammers become hostile and yelling.
What Callers from 02 8766 1819 Claim
Contributors who answered calls from 02 8766 1819 report being told their internet access is actively being exploited by hackers for serious crimes. One contributor documented the caller's exact words: "you think it very funny to be a money laundering or a gambler online or a maker or pornography for children?" This phrasing appears intentionally shocking and accusatory to create urgency and fear.
The callers insist they need immediate remote access to the victim's device to "make your internet private" or switch settings. When told security measures are already in place, they escalate by claiming the victim is complicit: "there's illegal activity linked to my internet." Several reports note the callers use poor English grammar, with one contributor recording the phrase "oh my gawwwd very bad things."
Name inconsistencies are common. One contributor caught a caller claiming his name was "Dave" initially, then "Allan Jones," then "Dave Allan Jones" when confronted - suggesting the caller was unprepared or reading from a script.
Escalation and Repeated Contact Attempts
One contributor reported that after hanging up on a caller from 02 8766 1819 and refusing the scam, they immediately received two follow-up calls from numbers spoofed to appear as if from Spain (including +34 657 951 592). This pattern indicates a coordinated scam operation attempting multiple contact angles to wear down victims' resistance.
A separate report also noted that the initial caller from 0287661819 threatened to call back in half an hour to "resolve" the issue, suggesting automated callback scheduling as part of the scam workflow.
Call Patterns and Reporting Channels
All four reports were submitted between 21 April 2026, with three incoming calls answered directly and one robocall voicemail in another language. The concentration of reports within a single day suggests an active campaign by this number. Contributors received calls during business and evening hours, with one described as "today" (indicating recent activity).
One contributor also received an unrelated voicemail from a robotic voice speaking another language from 02 8766 1819, which may indicate the number is being used for multiple scam campaigns or has been spoofed by different operations.

Voicemail from a robot speaking another language asking me to press a key
Just got a call from an indian “Dave Jones” claiming he wanted to advise hackers are using my internet for illegal activities. Said they were using it for money laundering, making child porn, online gambling.
I asked where he was calling from.
He replied “I am the manager at N B N Headquarters”
I told him I wasn’t interested which seemed to aggravate him and he began to yell at me that he needed to switch my “Google from private to public”
I said it was already on private.
He started yelling again saying “you think it very funny to be a money laundering or a gambler online or a maker or pornography for children?” (that’s his bad command of the English language is)
I asked if he could call me back as I didn't have time to talk. He got a bit aggressive but said he would call back in 1/2 hour as it was very serious.
I hung up and blocked.

WRITE A REVIEWFrequently Asked Questions
Is 02 8766 1819 really from the NBN?
No. Multiple contributors report that 02 8766 1819 (0287661819) is impersonating NBN staff. The actual National Broadband Network does not cold-call customers about detected illegal activity on their internet or demand remote access. Legitimate NBN support requires you to initiate contact or will contact you about service issues you've already reported. If you're unsure, hang up and call NBN directly using the number on your bill or their official website.
What should I do if the caller from 0287661819 becomes aggressive?
Hang up immediately. Contributors who received calls from 02 8766 1819 reported the scammers yelling and becoming hostile when questioned. This is a pressure tactic designed to panic you into complying. Do not engage further, do not let anger or fear override your judgment, and do not grant access to your device or provide information. Block the number and report to Scamwatch.
Why did I get follow-up calls from Spain after hanging up on 02 8766 1819?
One contributor received calls from numbers spoofed to appear as if from Spain immediately after declining the 02 8766 1819 call. This indicates a coordinated scam operation with multiple contact attempts. Scammers use spoofed numbers to bypass call blocking and increase pressure on targets. Do not answer unknown numbers, and report all follow-up calls to ACMA at acma.gov.au.
The caller from 0287661819 said illegal activity is linked to my internet. Does this mean I'm in trouble?
No. This is a scam threat with no basis. Contributors who received calls from 02 8766 1819 were told the same thing, but the claim is fabricated to create fear and urgency. If your internet were truly being used for crimes, law enforcement would contact you through official channels-not a cold call demanding remote access. Do not engage with the caller or believe their claims.
What if I already gave the caller from 02 8766 1819 remote access to my computer?
Act quickly. Disconnect from the internet immediately, unplug your modem, and contact your ISP and bank to report the security breach. Change passwords for email, banking, and other sensitive accounts using a different, secure device. Monitor your bank statements and credit reports for unauthorised activity. Consider placing a fraud alert with credit agencies and reporting the incident to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au. Contact your bank immediately if you notice any suspicious transactions.
Should I call 02 8766 1819 back if the scammer said they'd call again?
No. Do not call back 0287661819 under any circumstances. If they call again, let it go to voicemail and block the number. Calling back confirms your number is active and may lead to more calls or the scammers passing your details to other scam operations. Block the number immediately and report it to ACMA and Scamwatch.
