NRMA Impersonation Reports for 02 8741 6070

One contributor has reported a sophisticated impersonation scam involving 02 8741 6070 (also written as 0287416070). The scammer sent an email purporting to be from NRMA, complete with the recipient's actual vehicle registration details. The email requested a callback to 02 8741 6070 to verify roadside assistance contact information, creating a false sense of legitimacy.

The contributor took the precaution of visiting an NRMA office in person to verify their account details. NRMA confirmed that all roadside assist information on file was correct at their end, and critically, that 0287416070 is not a number they use for customer support. NRMA customer support operates exclusively through 13-series numbers (13 xx xx format), making 02 8741 6070 an immediate red flag for any supposed NRMA communication.

How the Scam Works

This impersonation attempt leverages data that appears to be legitimately obtained vehicle registration details. By including accurate information about the target's car registration, the email gains credibility and increases the likelihood of the recipient calling back. The scammer likely obtained this information through a data breach or purchased it from a compromised database.

The request to verify roadside assistance details is a social engineering tactic designed to seem routine and non-threatening. Many people would reasonably expect NRMA to contact them about account maintenance, making the email appear authentic at first glance. However, the use of a standard local number (02 8741 6070) rather than NRMA's standard 13-series contact numbers is the key distinguishing feature that reveals the scam.

What to Do If You Receive Communication from 02 8741 6070

If you receive a call, email, or SMS from 02 8741 6070 claiming to be from NRMA or any other organisation:

  • Do not: Call the number back, click any links in emails, or provide any personal or financial information
  • Do: Hang up or delete the message immediately
  • Do: Contact the organisation directly using their official contact number from their website or your records - never use a number provided in the suspicious communication
  • Do: Verify account details in person or through official channels before responding to any requests
  • Do: Block 0287416070 on your phone to prevent future contact

Identifying Fake NRMA Communications

NRMA's legitimate customer support operates only through 13-series phone numbers (13 xx xx format). If any communication claims to be from NRMA and provides a different type of number for callback - such as 02 8741 6070 or any other local or mobile number - it is fraudulent. Genuine NRMA communications will never ask you to call a number other than their official 13-series contact line.

Be particularly cautious of emails or SMS messages asking you to verify account details, even if they contain accurate personal information about your vehicle or account. Scammers obtain this data through breaches and use it to build credibility. Always verify directly with NRMA through their official channels before acting on any request.

This number sent me an email purporting to be from NRMA. Even had my registration details for the car and wanted me to ring the number to ensure my roadside assist details were correct. So I went to nrma in town and they checked my details and said all was correct at their end. Bit the phone number is not one they use. All their numbers for support contact are 13 xx xx type. So do not call this number and block it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 02 8741 6070 a real NRMA number?

No. NRMA confirmed that 02 8741 6070 (0287416070) is not one of their customer support numbers. NRMA uses only 13-series numbers (13 xx xx format) for all customer contact. If NRMA needs to reach you, they will never ask you to call a number like 02 8741 6070.

How did the scammer have my vehicle registration details?

The scammer likely obtained your registration information through a data breach or by purchasing it from a compromised database. This is why the email about 02 8741 6070 appeared credible - it contained accurate personal information. However, legitimate organisations like NRMA will never contact you through non-standard numbers to verify details they already have on file.

What should I do if I already called 02 8741 6070?

If you called 0287416070 but did not provide any personal information, financial details, or passwords, you should be safe. Immediately block the number on your phone. If you provided any sensitive information during the call, contact your bank and NRMA directly to monitor your accounts for suspicious activity. Consider changing passwords for any online accounts if they were discussed.

Could this be a legitimate NRMA update about my account?

No. NRMA has confirmed that 02 8741 6070 is not their number. Legitimate NRMA communications always come from 13-series numbers. If you are unsure about any communication claiming to be from NRMA, contact NRMA directly on their official number (found on their website or your policy documents) rather than calling the number in the suspicious message.

What's the risk of calling back 02 8741 6070?

Calling 0287416070 could expose you to social engineering tactics designed to extract personal, financial, or security information. The scammer may pose as NRMA support and use the information they already have about your vehicle to build trust. They may then attempt to steal credit card details, account credentials, or other sensitive data. Always call official numbers instead.

Should I report this scam, and where?

Yes. Report 02 8741 6070 to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), ACMA (acma.gov.au), and directly to NRMA on their official number. These reports help authorities track scam patterns and protect other Australians. You can also report your experience on Reverseau to help others recognise this impersonation scam.
