The caller alleged someone was using the recipient's IP address for fraudulent transactions, then instructed them to download Anydesk and provide Unattended Access to their device. This is a classic remote access scam tactic designed to compromise personal devices and accounts.

A separate SMS from this number claimed someone had spent over a thousand dollars on a card the recipient doesn't own, with an implied phishing link to 'verify' the transaction.

Report Patterns and Timing

One contributor who received multiple calls from 0286449531 noted they received similar calls on consecutive days, with callers hanging up when told the recipient didn't have an Amazon account. This suggests the scammers may be working from lists and rapidly pivoting between cover stories when initial tactics fail.

SCAN CALLER! A man with an Indian accent called saying he was John from Amazon and said I had an outstanding purchase of over $1200 on my account for an iPhone 14. When I said I didn't know about that purchase he said someone was using my IP address to make these transactions. I played dumb and wasted his time for 17 minutes, with him telling me to download Anydesk and give him Unattended Access to my phone. He hung up when I said I was on a video call with my friend from the Australian Federal Police, because there are a lot of scam calls going around lately. I received a similar call yesterday but they hung up when I said I don't have an Amazon account. If you know what you're doing, waste their time. Those 17 minutes of me stringing them along is 17 minutes less that they're able to scam someone who'll fall for it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 02 8644 9531 a legitimate Vodafone, Amazon, or Telstra number?

No. While 0286449531 is allocated to Optus Networks, it has been used by scammers impersonating Vodafone, Amazon, and Telstra. Legitimate companies never offer unsolicited discounts via cold calls or ask you to download remote access software. Always verify by calling the official company number from your account statements or their website.

Why did the caller ask me to download Anydesk when calling from 02 8644 9531?

This is a remote access scam tactic. By downloading Anydesk and granting Unattended Access, the scammer gains full control of your device, allowing them to steal passwords, intercept two-factor authentication codes, and access your bank accounts. Never grant remote access to your device during unsolicited calls, including those from 02 8644 9531.

What should I do if I already gave information to a caller from 0286449531?

If you provided personal details, bank information, or device access during a call from 02 8644 9531: immediately monitor your bank and email accounts for suspicious activity, change passwords for critical accounts, and consider contacting your bank to discuss fraud protection. If remote access was granted, restart your device in safe mode and run antivirus software.

How can I block calls from 02 8644 9531?

Use your phone's built-in call blocking feature (most Australian phones have this) to block 0286449531. If the number calls from slightly different variations, block those too. You can also report 02 8644 9531 to your telecommunications provider's fraud team for additional protection.

If I wasted time talking to the scammer from 02 8644 9531, does that help?

Yes. As one contributor noted, spending 17 minutes on a call from 0286449531 is 17 minutes the scammer isn't using to target someone who might fall for it. However, the primary goal should be protecting yourself and reporting the number, not engaging further.

Why does 02 8644 9531 show as an Optus Networks number if it's a scam?

Scammers often spoof or hijack legitimate telecommunications infrastructure. While 0286449531 is allocated to Optus Networks, the actual calls may be routed through VoIP services or spoofed to appear as this number. This is why you should never trust caller ID alone-always verify independently via official channels.
