    DEFINITELY A SCAM! I guess they forgot to make it private when they called, so I called them back. I then got a guy claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office, who then had me spell my last name about 30 times - He then asked for my address and when I refused to give it to him, he rattled off a list of addresses hoping I would say yes to one. I then said I did not trust the number and hung up on him. THEN -- Later in the evening I received a call from an unknown number. Same guy, same background noise. He kept repeating in a very nasty tone "Why did you call me" and "did my girlfriend get you to call me" - after me asking who the f&(* was on the phone, he then proceeded to verbally abuse me.

    Same as above. Claiming to be from Australian Taxation Office. Laughable to me since I work at the ATO and we do not leave messages like this. Second message we received, about two months apart.

    Same as previous comment - man with American accent called "Ron Lawson" saying a petition had been filed against me and I needed to call before I got arrested.

    This is a scam. It is a recorded message with an American accent. 'Ron Lawson'claims to be from the legal department of the Australian Taxation Office. It then states that a legal petition has been made against you for tax fraud and you should call them back before it appears before the courts or you are arrested.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
