    Received a call from 02 8607 8111 today from a woman with a British accent -though very hard to understand as a lot of the words were garbled. She said she was phoning to ask if we had been involved in motor vehicle accident over the last 12 months. On questioning where she got my number, she said that they had recently lost a lot of information from their database and were phoning people to update it. She said it was an Australian government database, though she couldn't give me which department nor a website to go to to check it out. Despite my questioning, it was very unclear who she was working for as her response was so garbled. She said the reason for the call was to update their database and if we had been in an accident, they would follow up on progress etc. When I said "no" she hung up in my ear! Very dodgy ...

    Got home from work. They left 3 messages. All automated & all of them identical. Although the messages themselves were all the same; they left two different call-back numbers; 02 8607 8111 & 02 8417 2676.

    It sounds like a refined Australian woman's voice. The start of the message is somewhat garbled, so I wasn't 100% sure who she claimed to work for. She used the words "Tax" and "Australian Tax Department.".

    During parts of the message I noticed that there was a clear intent to deliberately garble the message at certain sections, in a way where its a mish-mash of recorded words intricately strung together in an effort to fool you into thinking that the message comes from officialdom.

    They say things like; "Your account has been marked as delinquent" and; "A warrant has been issued for your arrest".

    So this one is clearly a scam. I'm happy that this site exists because it stops people from being hurt.

    Someone needs to stop these scammers. Malcolm should call Jamie and ask him if he could please have Carl and Lisa do segment on phone scammers.

    Recorded phone message claiming to be tax office. Saying that I have been flagged and that as I hadn't responed to correspondence a warrant had been issued for my arrest. When I called back they said they were from the tax office but continued to hang up when I questioned them.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
