    I got home today to find 5 messages on my phone all claiming to be Jason O'Connor (with a very strong foreign accent) from the ATO. Said there's a warrant out for my arrest for tax evasion and I should call him back to avoid being arrested by my local police. Hmmm. Not likely. Scam for sure.

    Had the same 3 call on message bank. So out of interest I rang them back actually got on to some foriner who claimed his name was Michael Anderson. He went through a whole lot section numbers, case number, his id number. In the end I asked how much I owe them the amount was 700 and something dollars. I asked him if he realised this number was listed as scam. He replied "give me 30 minutes and I will prove this is not a scam, I will have the police at your door in 30 minutes" I laughed and said ok. He then said goodbye. I did have some pleasure in doing this. How dare they do this, hope they get caught, charged and thrown away.

    Just got a call from Matthew Logan saying he was from the ATO, definite scam, saying a local Policeman was coming to my house with an arrest warrant due to unpaid tax said other dodgy things as well. I have always paid my tax every year and never prepared it myself. He had a foreign accent. Did not refer to me by name and it sounded scripted. Said it was about to go to court, I have never received any documentation in the mail, and as the ATO know who prepares my taxes and would have my personal details, I am sure they would have contacted me via these other avenues.

    We received 3 calls.2 of which went to message bank and the 3rd one my wife hung up on. First message was from a James and asked for a callback on 02 8607 8228, and the second one from a Matthew on 02 8607 5071.

    If I get it account, I'll just say that if you're from the ATO contact my accountant. Obviously you must know who that is.

    Also, who in Australia says that where taking you to the courthouse? Sounds like a New Jersey accent to me.

    Just got a call from this number from "Matthew Logan" - did not relate to me as a person by name or anything - he spoke about tax avoidance and court house and arrest warrents etc but clearly was a recorded message as he did not respond to me when I tried talking over him - following this "he" hung up without even giving me a chance to ask him questions. It was very suss and definitely not real.

    I have received a numbe of these calls over the last week or so.1st one today at 10.53am 29/916 and caller advised he was from the Traffic incident reporting and that was my name and he used my correct name. I said yes and he advised that a report had been made about my involvement in a traffic incident and would be taken to courthouse (his words). Left message in 101 after I told him off and it said his name was Matthew Logan and to call him back on 02 86075071. Next call around 3pm - 3.30 and said he was from ATO and that a tax matter in my name to be taken to court. I asked his name again and he said Michael Brown. When I said he sounded like Matthew Logan who had rung from Traffic reporting he hung up. These people can be very intimidating but don't fall for this rubbish.

    I had an automated voice message left on my answering machine. A person named Matthew Logan said he was from the ATO, I had a tax debt and that I would be prosecuted and arrested if I didn't call him back on (02) 8607-5071. The voice did not specifically refer to me or anyone in my house by name or leave any kind of reference number. I have tried calling the number but the call could not be connected. This has happened a number of times.

    Same call. Same claim of tax evasion. American accent. Not plausible because language is wrong. Words such as "courthouse". Let me guess. If I call back, all my problems can disappear in exchange for a payment. I feel sorry for people who are stung by this.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
