If you've received a call from 02 8552 6902 / 0285526902, you may want to rethink how you respond. User reports indicate that this number is associated with a scam aimed at deceiving individuals through fraud prevention claims related to Visa and Mastercard. These scams are growing increasingly sophisticated, making it essential to understand the tactics employed by the callers.

The Scam Explained

The scam revealed by users stems from calls falsely claiming to be from “Visa & Mastercard Fraud Prevention.” According to multiple reviews, a person identifying themselves as Jennifer Williams, allegedly representing these financial institutions, inquired about unusual transactions, effectively coercing the victim to divulge personal information. Calls typically include scripted messages warning of unauthorised transactions, enticing the recipient to engage without verifying the caller's legitimacy.

Why This Number is Considered a Scam

Given that the caller did not refer to the recipient by name, a common tactic used by legitimate financial institutions to personalize the interaction, it raises an immediate red flag. In addition, legitimate credit card companies almost exclusively communicate any security threats through written notification or personal contact through secured platforms, rather than unsolicited telephone calls.

What To Do If You Receive a Call From This Number

  • Do Not Engage: If you pick up and realize the conversation pertains to a suspicious nature, hang up immediately.
  • Do Not Provide Information: Never share personal, banking, or financial details over the phone to unsolicited callers.
  • Verify Independently: If you suspect there may be a legitimate issue with your account, directly contact your bank using the official contact number available on their website.
  • Report the Call: Document the call details and report it to local authorities or a consumer protection agency to help others avoid similar scams.

Conclusion

Calls from 02 8552 6902 / 0285526902 should be viewed with caution. Through user experiences, it's evident this number is part of a fraudulent scheme aiming to exploit individuals. Always stay vigilant and utilise resources like Reverseau or a reverse phone lookup Australia service if you receive calls that seem suspicious.

By being informed and assertive, you can protect yourself and assist in combating the rise of phone scams targeting unsuspecting Australians.

The person identified as Jennifer Williams, with an Asian accent. Said from "Visa & Mastercard Fraud Prevention"??? Asked if I had made an Amazon purchase for $600+ on Visa in the last 10 mins. I said no. Then asked if the purchase was on Mastercard. She asked if I was in SA. I said that she ought to have all that info if she is connected to such an organisation. I also told her that we would expect our bank to contact us if our card had been compromised. I then told her that she was trying to scam me and to get off the line.

She did not refer to me by name at any time.

I got a recorded voice message that started with a warning about an unrecognized transaction. The message prompted the recipient to take action, which makes it a suspected scam call.
