Apple Impersonation and Tech Support Scam Reports for 02 8551 4316
Three contributors have reported suspicious activity from 02 8551 4316 (also written as 0285514316), a NSW-based local service number. The reports reveal a coordinated scam targeting payment app users through fake Apple impersonation combined with remote access tech support tactics.
One detailed report describes a caller claiming to represent Apple HQ who fabricated fraudulent cryptocurrency orders to create urgency. The contributor received a call after discovering suspicious orders in their Shop app and called the number found on the receipt. The caller then attempted to manipulate the contributor into accessing a VPN (NORD) by falsely explaining IP address hacking scenarios. This pattern combines impersonation, fake technical authority, and attempted remote access provision into a multi-layered deception.
What Callers from 02 8551 4316 Say and Do
Reports about 0285514316 show callers using specific manipulation tactics. One contributor was told the caller represented Apple HQ and that cryptocurrency orders on their account were fraudulent scams. The caller then offered to guide the victim through a "security process" to prevent PayPal payment, framing the VPN access request as necessary technical protection.

- Reference fake orders or fraudulent transactions to create urgency
- Request victims access external VPN services (NORD mentioned)
- Attempt to justify technical requests by explaining IP address compromise
- Disconnect abruptly when questioned about the legitimacy of their requests

The timing and channel distribution reveals active scam operation. Two reports came through answered calls, with one occurring as recently as May 2026, indicating 02 8551 4316 remains in use for active scams. One contributor was proactive in cross-checking the number during the call and discovered it was already flagged as a scam, allowing them to hang up before proceeding.
A contributor who engaged with the 02 8551 4316 caller reported that the scammer hung up immediately when challenged about why they were being directed to a VPN service. This abrupt disconnection when credibility was questioned is typical of social engineering scams that rely on creating false urgency and avoiding scrutiny.
Following their experience, the affected contributor took protective steps including contacting their banks, PayPal, and the Shop app provider directly. Notably, the Shop app provider declined responsibility, highlighting the complexity victims face when scammers exploit legitimate payment applications to deliver their pitch.

What Our Users Reviewed
I found 2 orders in the Shop app for crypto currency. On the receipt was this number - I called and was told they were APPL HQ and that orders were a scam and they would guide methought the process to ensure PayPal did not allow payment. He began to explain IP addresses as having been hacked and asked me to go to a NORD address. (I - in parallel - checked the number saw it was a reported scam one) When I asked why I was going onto a VPN he hung up. I have since been in touch with my banks, PayPal and Shop. Shop takes zero responsibility so I have deleted the app as well.
Scam. Has a chinese automated voice.
Probably a scam number tbh.

WRITE A REVIEWFrequently Asked Questions
Why did the caller from 02 8551 4316 ask me to use a VPN?
The caller falsely claimed it was necessary for security, but this is a classic tech support scam tactic. Real Apple support, banks, and legitimate tech companies will never ask you to access a VPN during a cold call or grant remote access to your computer. The VPN request from 0285514316 was designed to either compromise your device or provide the scammer unmonitored access to your accounts.
How did the caller from 02 8551 4316 know about my Shop app orders?
One contributor reported finding the 02 8551 4316 number on a receipt inside the Shop app itself, suggesting the scammer either compromised the app, intercepted notifications, or placed the number there as a fake support contact. This is why you should never call numbers found in unexpected notifications or receipts - instead, open the legitimate app directly or call the company's official customer service number from their website.
What should I do if I already gave remote access to someone from 0285514316?
If you granted remote access or downloaded software from a caller claiming to be from 02 8551 4316: immediately disconnect your device from the internet, change your passwords for all financial accounts from a different device, contact your bank and payment providers to report potential fraud, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software, and report the incident to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au. Consider consulting a cybersecurity professional if valuable data or financial accounts were accessed.
Is 02 8551 4316 actually an Apple customer service number?
No. 02 8551 4316 is not an Apple customer service number. It's a NSW-based local service number reported by multiple contributors as a scam. Apple will never call you cold to report fraudulent orders. If you see orders you don't recognise in your Apple account, log in directly via apple.com or the official Apple app and manage them there - do not call any number provided by an unsolicited caller.
Why does 02 8551 4316 sometimes use an automated Chinese voice?
One contributor reported a Chinese automated robocall from 0285514316, indicating the number is used for both targeted live-agent scams (like the Apple impersonation) and bulk robocall campaigns. This suggests organised scam operation using the same number for multiple fraud methods, possibly to overwhelm reporting systems or test victim responses.
What should I do if I've already paid money to someone from 02 8551 4316?
If you transferred money or provided payment details to a caller from 02 8551 4316 or 0285514316: contact your bank or payment provider immediately to report the fraud and attempt to reverse any transfers, report the incident to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au, lodge a complaint with ACMA at acma.gov.au, consider reporting to Australian Federal Police if significant funds were involved, and monitor your accounts for further unauthorised activity. Recovery is difficult but reporting helps authorities track scam networks.
