Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the caller from 02 8550 4871 tell me not to call my bank?

This is a classic scam tactic. Legitimate banks never discourage customers from verifying their identity by calling back on an official number. A contributor who received a call from 02 8550 4871 reported the caller explicitly stated: "No! don't try to call other people regarding this" - a red flag designed to prevent you from discovering the deception. Always hang up and independently call your bank using the number on your card or their official website.

The caller from 0285504871 mentioned a specific dollar amount on my account. How do they know this?

Scammers use plausible amounts ($499, typical transaction values) combined with psychological pressure. The call from 02 8550 4871 claiming a $499 Russian transaction was designed to alarm the recipient. Legitimate unauthorised transactions are investigated by your bank through secure channels, never via unsolicited calls. If you're unsure, hang up and contact your bank directly on the number printed on your card - never use a number the caller provides.

I received multiple calls from 02 8550 4871 with no voicemail. What does this mean?

Multiple calls from 0285504871 with no message left indicate automated dialling systems testing for active phone numbers. Scammers use this technique to confirm your number is monitored and worth targeting with a scam call later. Several reports mention receiving five consecutive calls from 02 8550 4871 without voicemail. Block the number immediately and monitor your accounts for suspicious activity.

The voice on the call from 02 8550 4871 sounded robotic or had an American accent. Is this a red flag?

Yes. Reports indicate 02 8550 4871 uses both robotic voice systems (impersonating FedEx) and callers with American or Canadian accents (despite targeting Australian accounts). Legitimate Australian banks and delivery services use local contact centres. The combination of automated robotic voices followed by human representatives requesting personal information, as reported by 0285504871 recipients, is a strong indicator of scam activity.

The caller used multiple phone numbers during our conversation. How is this possible?

A contributor reported that during a single 02 8550 4871 scam interaction, the caller also provided numbers 02 8550 4879 and +64 22 025 0265 (New Zealand format). Scammers use multiple numbers to appear more legitimate, create confusion, or redirect victims if one number is blocked. This behaviour combined with confusing follow-up SMS messages is designed to disorient victims. If you experience this, report all numbers to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and your bank immediately.

What should I do if I already gave personal information to a caller from 02 8550 4871?

Contact your bank immediately using the number on your card or statement - not any number the caller provided. Monitor your accounts closely for unauthorised transactions. If you disclosed credit card, account numbers, or personal details to 0285504871, ask your bank to review recent activity and consider replacing your cards. Report the call to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), ACMA (acma.gov.au), and the Australian Federal Police via cyber.gov.au. Enable additional security on your accounts, such as two-factor authentication or transaction alerts.
