The Scare Tactics Used

Reports indicate that the caller starts with an automated message, claiming to be from "PayPal Banking security," and alerts the recipient of a dubious $999.00 AUD transaction supposedly involving online shopping. Victims are prompted to press '1' to cancel the payment or '2' to approve it, with no legitimate reference linked to their PayPal accounts.

Characteristics of the Scam

  • Robot Calls: Many users mentioned that the calls were automated, which is atypical for genuine customer service communications.

Received a call from this number; once answered was diverted to robot saying from PayPal Security about an amount being deducted from my account to press 1 to approve or 2 to speak to an executive account manager. Obviously a scam so I hung up and blocked the number. I have been called by security departments for other accounts and it is usually a real person calling you; not a robot. Beware!

Fairly typical form, called, no message left. These guys really don't put a lot of thought into it. Copperplate scammer behaviour.

Scam call supposedly from PayPal.

A call claiming to be from PayPal Banking Security informed me of a payment request for $999.00 AUD for an online purchase. They asked me to press 1 to cancel or 2 to approve the transaction, although I found no reference to this charge on my PayPal account.
