Bank Impersonation Reports for 02 8530 5247

Four contributors have flagged 02 8530 5247 (also written as 0285305247) for scam activity involving impersonation of major Australian banks. The predominant pattern involves callers claiming to represent Commonwealth Bank, asserting that unauthorized transactions have been made from the recipient's account to overseas accounts. Three separate reports specifically mention calls from 0285305247 using this Commonwealth Bank impersonation tactic, with callers citing transaction amounts around $470.

What makes these calls particularly revealing is contributor behaviour that exposed the callers' lack of genuine banking knowledge. When recipients confirmed they had made the transaction (contrary to the script the caller was following), the callers became confused, repeated questions, hesitated, and ultimately hung up. This pattern suggests callers are reading from a predetermined script and lack genuine access to account information or transaction history.

What Callers from 02 8530 5247 Claim

Contributors report callers from 02 8530 5247 opening with an urgent claim about a suspicious transaction. The specific scenario involves a $470 transfer to an overseas account, framed as requiring immediate verification from the account holder. One contributor noted the caller had a thick accent and appeared unfamiliar with basic banking terminology when questioned.

The script appears designed to create urgency and pressure the recipient into confirming transaction details. However, when recipients deviated from the expected response pattern by agreeing they had made the transaction, callers struggled to proceed. One contributor described the caller becoming notably confused, repeating the verification question multiple times before hesitating and disconnecting the call entirely.

A separate report also mentions a Telstra impersonation attempt from 02 8530 5247, where the caller claimed an IP address had been compromised. This contributor noted the caller's unfamiliarity with technical terminology, suggesting a similar script-reading approach across different impersonation scenarios.

Report Patterns and Timing

All four reports of 0285305247 came through answered calls, indicating the callers successfully connected with recipients. The Commonwealth Bank impersonation reports cluster around January 2024, with one additional report from early February 2026. The number is allocated as a local service in NSW via Symbio Networks.

Multiple contributors reported that the callers appeared unprepared when recipients didn't follow the expected response script. This suggests a high-volume calling operation using predetermined talking points rather than genuine access to customer accounts or transaction data.

Claimed to be Telstra, said my IP address was compromised, caller had thick accent and didn't seem to know what they were talking about

Scam. Said was from the Commonwealth bank and was ringing me to confirm that I had made a $470 transaction to an overseas account. I don't have a Commonwealth Bank account. He was most confused when I said 'Yes, I made that transaction' and asked me to confirm again. When I yet again very enthusiastically confirmed I had made the transaction he said 'umm' and then hung up. Obviously I didn't answer as per the script.....

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the calls from 02 8530 5247 obviously fake?

Contributors report that callers from 02 8530 5247 (0285305247) used the same script regardless of whether the recipient actually had an account with the bank being impersonated. When one contributor said they had made the disputed $470 transaction, the caller became confused because this deviated from the expected script response. Genuine bank staff would have access to actual account data and wouldn't be confused by such answers. The callers also displayed unfamiliarity with basic banking or technical terminology, further exposing the impersonation.

Should I be worried if 02 8530 5247 called me?

If 0285305247 has already called you, the good news is that contributors who engaged with the callers reported that the callers hung up or became confused. The callers appear to be reading from a script and lack access to real account information. However, do not share any personal or financial details if they call again. Block the number (02 8530 5247) to prevent further contact, and monitor your bank accounts for any suspicious activity.

Why do they claim to be Commonwealth Bank specifically?

Commonwealth Bank is one of Australia's largest banks, making it a credible-sounding impersonation target. Scammers use well-known bank names because recipients are more likely to trust a familiar institution. However, the callers from 02 8530 5247 (0285305247) appear to be using a generic script adapted across different impersonation scenarios. Other contributors reported the same number claiming to be Telstra, suggesting the callers may have multiple scripts but limited technical knowledge about the organizations they're impersonating.

What should I do if I accidentally gave information to 02 8530 5247?

If you provided any financial or personal information to callers from 02 8530 5247 (0285305247), contact your bank immediately using the official number on your bank statement or website. Do not use any contact details the caller provided. Inform your bank of the call and request they monitor your accounts for fraudulent activity. You should also report the number to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au). Consider changing your passwords if you disclosed login credentials.

Is 02 8530 5247 a real Commonwealth Bank number?

No. The number 0285305247 is a local NSW service allocated to Symbio Networks and is not a Commonwealth Bank contact number. Legitimate banks do not cold-call customers claiming unauthorized transactions. If you're unsure whether a call is genuine, always hang up and contact your bank using the number on your official statement or their website. This is the only safe way to verify if a call was authentic.

Can I block 02 8530 5247 permanently?
