The phone number 02 8529 5522 / 0285295522 has garnered attention from users who have reported receiving suspicious calls from this number. Analysis of these calls indicates that this number is associated with scammers impersonating Commonwealth Bank representatives. As more individuals increasingly fall victim to similar fraudulent schemes, it's crucial to recognize the signs of a scam and how to deal with such calls.

Users' Reports Highlighting the Scam

Multiple reports from users, particularly those dated in December 2023, highlight a common theme: callers claiming to be from Commonwealth Bank alerting them of supposed transaction issues. The callers often suggest there are unauthorised withdrawals from the user's bank account, usually citing a specific amount, like the $400 mentioned in several complaints.

One review shared a notable interaction where the user questioned the legitimacy of the call. The response from the caller involved yelling, which is atypical for customer service representatives, especially from established banks. Legitimate bank call centres are trained to handle inquiries with professionalism and would never raise their voices or pressure customers.

Nature of the Scam

This type of scam is commonly referred to as a “phishing scam,” where scammers attempt to extract personal information or financial data by posing as trustworthy entities. They often aim to create urgency, making the victim fearful of losing money or of a security breach, which can lead to panic and hasty decisions.

I spoke with a female Customer Service Operator who became increasingly hostile when I asked questions. She seemed aggravated and eventually I hung up and blocked the number. In my experience of working in call centers for 46 years, legitimate places do not typically call mobile phones directly.

The caller said they're Commonwealth Bank and they're told me I have a transaction issue for something $400. When I said to the caller I'll Google this phone number and I'll get back to you, the caller kind of yelled at me " what are you talking about we're calling from the bank!" I think banks wouldn't yell at customers. I'm pretty sure the caller is a scammer.

Recorded message from a scammer from Amazon saying that money has been taken out of my account so it’s obviously a scam.

I was called by someone claiming there is an $830 purchase that appears fraudulent. When I began questioning them, they got flustered. The call came from an Indian call center with a lot of background noise, confirming it was a complete scam.
