Bank and Service Impersonation Reports for 02 8526 6358

Multiple contributors have reported calls from 02 8526 6358 (also written as 0285266358) involving sophisticated impersonation of major Australian financial institutions and service providers. The pattern is consistent: callers claim to represent Commonwealth Bank's Cyber Security Team, Visa, Amazon Prime, or Telstra, often citing fraudulent transactions or account issues to create urgency.

One contributor received calls from a series of similar numbers (02 8526 6352, 02 8526 6358, and 02 8526 6359) all claiming to be Commonwealth Bank's Cyber team. The contributor noted the hesitation and delayed response from the caller was a red flag, prompting them to verify the legitimate CommBank number online. The reported numbers did not match official Commonwealth Bank contact details. A second contributor reported receiving a call claiming an $800 unauthorised transfer to "Mark Hamilton in California" - when challenged on the amount, the caller paused and hung up, confirming the deception.

Contributors describe callers with heavy accents claiming to represent Visa in Sydney, reporting unusual transactions including international money transfers and eBay purchases. One contributor noted the timing was suspicious - they had completed an eBay transaction just three minutes before the call arrived. Another reported an Amazon Prime impersonation, with an automated voice claiming their account would be debited for a subscription at nearly double the standard cost.

Specific Claims and Caller Tactics from 02 8526 6358

Reports from 0285266358 reveal several recurring claims designed to prompt immediate action:

  • Commonwealth Bank impersonation: Callers cite unauthorised transfers of $800 to overseas recipients, claiming to be the "Cyber Security Team" investigating fraud
  • Visa fraud alerts: Callers report unusual transactions including international money transfers and online purchases, claiming immediate card verification is needed
  • Amazon Prime billing: Automated voice states subscription renewal at inflated amounts, prompting urgent payment confirmation
  • Telstra service threats: Caller claims internet will be cut off within two hours due to account issues, demanding immediate verification
  • NBN impersonation: One contributor received a similar call from a different number claiming to be the "NBN National Safety Department"

When challenged, callers from 02 8526 6358 display evasive behaviour. One contributor who questioned why CommBank's Cyber team hadn't left a voicemail received no response - a key indicator that legitimate institutions always leave callback options. Another contributor who confirmed they made an $800 transfer heard the caller pause and disconnect, suggesting the scammer was caught testing false claims.

Caller Behaviour and Urgency Tactics

Contributors report that calls from 02 8526 6358 employ high-pressure urgency tactics combined with threats. One caller claiming to be from Telstra became "belligerent" when credentials were questioned, threatening internet disconnection within two hours before hanging up. Multiple reports mention callers creating artificial time pressure - stating accounts would be frozen, services cancelled, or funds transferred unless immediate action was taken.

The robocall component is notable: several contributors reported automated voices, particularly for the Amazon Prime impersonation and some initial contact attempts. These appear designed to verify active phone numbers before human scammers follow up. The Sutherland area code (02 8526) suggests a local spoofing operation, with contributors noting the same number or near-identical variations (02 8526 6352, 6359) appearing on multiple occasions.

Report Patterns and Timing

Community reports for 02 8526 6358 span from May 2023 to January 2026, indicating an ongoing scam operation. The majority of reports occurred in May 2023, clustering between 16-21 May. Contributors received calls at various times including early morning (03:00-08:00) and evening hours (20:00+), suggesting round-the-clock calling campaigns.

Notably, one contributor received calls from multiple related numbers (02 8526 6352, 6358, 6359) within the same Sutherland exchange on consecutive days, indicating the scammers operate a batch of spoofed numbers. Another reported receiving a call from a "different number with last digit changed" the following day, confirming the scammers rotate similar numbers to avoid blocks.

The allocation data shows this number is provisioned as a local service through Symbio Networks in NSW, suggesting the spoofed number mimics legitimate Australian telecom infrastructure. This local appearance increases the likelihood targets will answer, trusting the familiar area code.

02 8526 6352 (Sutherland) and 02 8526 6358 (Sutherland) and 02 8526 6359 - have all rung stating they were the Commonwealth Bank Cyber team due to the delay in starting the conversation, makes me question the phone call is not legit. So I did a check online to determine what the CommBank's Cyber teams phone details were and they didn't match. I know if it legit they would leave a message so I could ring them back.... In which they didn't, total scam!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 02 8526 6358 calling and claiming to be Commonwealth Bank?

Multiple contributors report that 02 8526 6358 uses impersonation of CommBank's Cyber Security Team to create urgency. Callers falsely claim unauthorised $800 transfers to overseas recipients (often "Mark Hamilton in California") and demand immediate verification of banking details. Legitimate Commonwealth Bank never contacts customers unsolicited about fraud - they wait for you to call them back using the official number on your card.

Is 0285266358 really calling from Sutherland?

No. While 0285266358 is provisioned as a local Sutherland number through Symbio Networks, contributors confirm this is spoofed. One contributor received calls from a series of related numbers (02 8526 6352, 6358, 6359) claiming to be different organisations, and another received calls from "different numbers with last digit changed" on consecutive days - a classic scammer tactic to evade blocks.

What should I do if 02 8526 6358 claims I have fraudulent transactions?

Hang up immediately. Do not confirm or deny any transactions the caller mentions - this confirms your account is active and makes you a better target. Call your bank directly using the official number on the back of your card or the bank's website. Legitimate banks verify fraud through secure channels, not unsolicited calls, and they never ask you to confirm transaction amounts or provide passwords.

Why do some calls from 0285266358 use automated voices?

Several contributors report robocall components from 02 8526 6358, particularly for Amazon Prime and initial contact attempts. Automated voices are used to verify active phone numbers before human scammers follow up with more convincing impersonation. If you receive an automated message from this number, hang up and block it immediately.

What is the NBN/Telstra connection to 02 8526 6358?

While 02 8526 6358 itself is primarily reported for bank impersonation, one contributor received a similar call from a different number claiming to be the "NBN National Safety Department," and another received an aggressive call from this number claiming to be Telstra, threatening to cut off internet in two hours. These are all part of the same scam ecosystem - callers impersonating multiple service providers to exploit urgency and fear.

How do I block 02 8526 6358 and similar numbers?

Block 02 8526 6358 directly in your phone contacts or messaging app. To prevent similar numbers from ringing through, enable "Silence Unknown Callers" on iPhone (Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers) or use your phone's built-in spam filter. Contributors recommend reporting related numbers (02 8526 6352, 6359) to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au) so the scam pattern can be tracked and warnings issued.
