    Left 2 threatening messages on phone message service to call back to avoid consequences without stating who they were. Definitely sounds like a scam.

    Today Sept.6 2016 we received a message on our answering machine referring to tax evasion.

    We have retrieved their phone number from Telstra answering service, being 02 84172210.

    After we rang this number up a person with a foreign accent - probably Asian - and we were told that we had to pay about $4300 in tax arrears.

    I told the man that I wouldn't do any such thing over the phone and to put it in writing and mail it to our address, which he already had with our full name and home address.

    Edwin and Annie Fabry - Upper Coomera 4209.

    A Message was left on answering machine. The person did not identify themselves or where they were calling from. The person left phone number and repeated it again. The person finished by saying there would be consequences if the call was not returned. The person did not say who the message was for.

    Message left on my answering machine but no reference who the message was for. Said it was regarding a lawsuit for tax evasion and fraud. Clearly a scam.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
