Reports indicate that the calls utilise automated messages claiming to be from Immigration, prompting recipients to press various keys for information. Given the nature of these communications, it falls under the category of suspicious activity.
Common Characteristics of the Scam
The scams associated with 02 8359 2953 / 0283592953 typically feature robotic voices stating that the caller has been trying to reach the recipient regarding important document notifications. Such a tactic is commonly used by scammers to invoke urgency and compel individuals to respond without verifying the authenticity of the call. Users have noted similar calls made from an alternate number, (02) 8359 2673, indicating a wider operation.
Why It's Important to Remain Cautious
- Robotic Messages: The reliance on automated messages is a significant red flag. Legitimate agencies typically do not use this method to communicate important information.
- Voicemails in Different Languages: The inclusion of messages in languages like Chinese, without any prior context to the recipient, increases the suspicion, as it is less likely to be a genuine communication from a government agency.
- No Response Capability: Reports of being unable to reconnect with the number adds to the doubts surrounding its legitimacy.

I received a call from this number, during which a recorded message claimed that "immigration has tried to contact you many times regarding an important document notification." The message provided options to press 1 for English or 2 for Chinese. I pressed 2, believing that pressing 1 would end the call. A Chinese-speaking representative answered, and I expressed my frustration, telling him to stop calling and to pluck himself at his leisure.
