There is a new scam doing the rounds in Australia – I have been called, and so have other members of my family.
This group is cold calling people saying they are from the "National Rebate Initiative". They say that this is an Australian Government initiative.
FACT 1: There is no such initiative from the government.
FACT 2: There is no company or trading name registered with this name.
They will ask you for details of whether you are a homeowner under 60, and how much you earn.
DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR DETAILS.
If you do, they will: 1) Tell you that you can save $8.000 – $15.000 per year. And 2) Ask to send someone round to your house. This appointment will be about investing in property – and losing money in it (negative gearing).
When quizzed about how they got our phone number, they say they use a 'register of all homeowners in Australia'.
This company (if it is one) is NOT adhering to the National DO NOT CALL Register.
If you get a call – please update this thread with further identifying details of the culprits, and also advise scamwatch.gov.au.
