    Scam. Probably a false generated number. Busy when dialled using 1831 prefix.

    This number has tried to call me at least 3 times and never leaves a message. Called in the middle of the day last week and in the late afternoon twice.

    Yes I received a call from this number today 14 June 2016 at 1700hrs. She had a Kiwi accent, claimed to be calling from Sydney. I told her I was reporting her to the Police and then I hung up.

    Call came in at 7pm. Claimed to be from an (unidentifiable - heavily accented) insurance company. Said it was in reference to my car accident. I said I had not had a car accident and they said OK and hung up. Scary part was they addressed me by my first name (which is not a common name).

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
