    Just happened to me. Same story, "James Anderson" left a voicemail claiming to be from the ATO saying there was a warrant out under my name and I had to call him back. Number was (02) 8310 7997.

    Hi, Same here, a male with Indian/Pakistani accent claiming an arrest and warrant. Rude and aggressive, left multiple voice messages to my dismay. It is a scam. Exact cases like all the other comments on this page. They even called me on another number claiming to be the police. Unbelievable!

    Received two voice messages from this number. The caller had an Indian accent saying it was the Tax Office calling about a tax evasion/fraud and that I or my attorney should call back.

    12th September 2016 - He has used the name Joseph Garner. Tried to tell my mum there was an arrest warrant due to intentional tax fraud of $11.786.00 and violation of 5 different legal codes.

    Extremely rude and aggressive. He speaks very fast in an attempt to confuse you.

    Definitely a scam! Do not give any personal details.

    Also, if he states an arrest warrant reference number to try and scare you, please be aware that even if it was real, if a warrant is issued it has to be served by police even if you pay any money, if you're unsure, call your local police station.

    We missed a call from this number at 9.46am on the 8th August and a message was left. A man with an Indian accent said pretty much the same thing as quoted in the other comments on this page. (Rolls eyes.).

    I received three calls from this number today. I checked the number here, then rang them back. A person answered and said 'Tax Office, confirm your name please.' I said, 'No, I'd like you to prove to me that you are the Tax Office.' His reply was, 'Mother F**cker'. It is a scam, either that, or they don't have any manners at the Tax Office these days!

    Here we go again. This number rang yesterday, I rang back and asked what company he was from - he said he was not from a company but the Australian Tax Office - I burst out laughing and said "oh yes and your name is Kenneth Matthews". He replied "WHAT?", I said "and you are Kenneth Matthews". He hung up. He rang again at 3pm and did not leave a message, and today at 9.01 this morning he left a message. SCAM ATO legal case. The calls are blocked but if you want to upset these people, have a whistle to blow. That will make them jump.

    We had calls over August and a nasty message from 0283107732 fellow said he was ATO Inspector Kenneth Matthews and had legal case against my name.

    Laugh at them - that hurts.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
