    I am a tax accountant. One of my clients received a message asking that he, or his lawyer ring back on 283105584. My client tells me the voice had a very think (male) Indian accent.

    This number either does not exist or has since been disconnected..

    ATO does not make approaches such as this and I have never known the ATO to leave messages on answering machines, especially threatening ones.

    It is a scam!

    Do not call back.

    They left a VERY threatening message saying they were rrom the ATO, and ignore the message at our own peril.

    They said it was because of tax fraud.

    Assholes!

    The voice said he was from the ATO and that they should be contacted as there was a pending legal case against the number they dialled. I believe this to be spam.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
