    Today our business received a call from Jeff Morgan who identified himself as being from the ATO. He left a message with reception staff to call him back urgently.

    I rang the return number of 02 6188 5608. I immediately bombarded him with questions- who are you, where are you calling from, how did you get this number, what time is it in Canberra now and which tax file number of mine are you calling about?

    He identified himself as Officer Jeffrey Morgan, Taxation Officer - ID 800614. He said he was calling from the ATO headquarters in Canberra and then our line disconnected. I think I scared him off.....

    Checked my answering machine on returning home to find a message from a 'geoffrey Morgan" from the Canberra office of the ATO. It basically stated I am under threat of tax evasion and not to disregard the message but to call him back on 02 61528604. I've deleted the message.

    He was so rude and demanding..

    I called him back.. Besides having her name wrong, he couldn't answer my questions and hung up on me.. Then wouldn't answer my call.

    Had no other details except the phone number and surname.

    Had no idea about my ATO tax.

    He needs to be Taken Down..

    I got a message today saying call Geoffrey Morgan from the Australian Taxation Office immediately as they had launched legal action against me for tax evasion. The number they asked me to call was 02 6152 8644, though. I called back and asked "So, is this really the taxation office? Really?". They hung up. I reported it to scamwatch.gov.au.

    This is definitely a scam and can be reported to the tax office by calling 13 28 61. But if you are ever concerned about someone claiming to be from the tax office don't give them any details about yourself or your bank account details. Don't call them back on the number they provide. You can then call the tax office using a phone number obtained from their website www.ato.gov.au or the white or yellow pages. If you have an accountant they can always double check if you owe money to the tax office.

    We just received this call too. I actually had a message on the answering machine from a Jeffery Morgan.

    After having heart failure I returned the call. But the moment I began asking the person I was speaking to questions that were too 'difficult' for them to answer, he got shirty and hung up on me.

    It infuriates me that they would rather try to steal hard working people's money than go an earn their own.

    If you receive a call like this, report it to Scamwatch at [link].

    The call doesn't quite fit it into any of the categories of scams that Scamwatch has -- probably you could lodge it under the "jobs and investment" category.

    I also received the same call as the others. Definitely a fake. It must be a crime to impersonate the Tax Office. Some of you have called the Tax Office. Have they said they plan to do anything, or have they suggested you call the police (or even federal police)?

    We've received this call today and several times in recent weeks. It has to be a scam. For sure, the ATO would send a letter in the mail or via "mygov".

    I have also received a phone message from 02 8310 5582 from someone who claimed to be from the Australian Tax Office and claiming that I needed to return the call urgently before the police came after me for tax evasion and tax fraud. If you get a call like this do NOT return the call. If you want to call the tax office to check it out, use the numbers listed on the ATO website or in the phone book. The cops are definitely not coming after you. Again the man had a heavy accent. I believe he claimed his name was Jeffrey Morgan or something similar.

    As per a few other comments for a similar number... I received a phone call from this number - Geoffrey Morgan representing Australian Taxation Evasion Office, saying there was a case against us for tax evasion and tax fraud and to call urgently otherwise the police would come around. Strong accent, can't pick it. Eventually called the number, someone with the same accent. ATO said they send letters out in the first instance.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
