Identifying the Phone Number: 02 8091 7798

The phone number 02 8091 7798 / 0280917798 has been categorised as a scam, specifically posing as a fraudulent call from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Many users have reported receiving disturbing messages regarding compromised tax file numbers, which is a common tactic used by scammers to instil fear and manipulate victims into compliance.

Nature of the Scam

Based on user reviews, the calls from this number typically mention that the recipient's TFN has been involved in fraudulent activities. The messages often threaten arrest if the recipient does not respond immediately. Phishing schemes like this prey on individuals' fears regarding legal consequences, aiming to extract personal information or money.

Why This Number Is Suspicious

  • Automated Voicemail: Several users report receiving automated voicemails. It’s important to note that legitimate government agencies will not use bot calls or threaten individuals in such a manner.
  • No Legitimate Correspondence: Reviewers state that they had no prior dealings that would warrant such a call from the ATO, further confirming the fraudulent nature of the communication.
  • Multiple Reports: The volume of complaints, all arriving around the same dates, indicates a coordinated scam effort rather than isolated incidents.

How to Handle Calls from 02 8091 7798

If you receive a call from this number or similar ones claiming to be from the ATO or other government entities, follow these steps:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid answering calls from unknown numbers, particularly if they claim authorities are involved.
  • Do Not Call Back: Engaging with scammers may provide them with your personal information.
  • Report the Call: You should report such calls to the appropriate authorities, such as the ATO or the police to assist in combatting this fraud.
  • Use Reverseau: Consider using services like Reverseau to perform a reverse phone lookup in Australia to check the legitimacy of unknown numbers.

Remaining Vigilant

Fraudulent calls, particularly those posing as recognised institutions like the ATO, are a reminder to remain vigilant in protecting your personal information. Awareness of the tactics used by scammers is key in ensuring that Australians do not fall victim to such elaborate schemes.

Just got a call from this number. I didn't answer because I don't recognize the number. I figure if it's important and legit, they'll leave a message. They left an automated voicemail about tax and being arrested. I have no issues with ATO and they do not operate that way. Please be careful and vigilant. These scammers target gullible vulnerable people. Do not call back. Sadly they get to use an AUS number.
