The reported scheme commonly involves fraudulent claims of unexpected transactions on users' credit or debit cards. Such a tactic is not just deceitful; it reflects a worrying trend among scammers who are growing increasingly sophisticated.

  • Common Messaging: Victims often report receiving messages indicating that their accounts are “restricted” or that there has been an "unexpected transaction," typically followed by fake contact instructions.
  • Heightened Personalisation: Some reports even mention that the scammers accurately reference personal data such as banking details or shopping habits, escalating the urgency and believability of their fraudulent claims.
  • Phishing Attempts: The sophistication doesn’t stop with just voice calls; responses to these texts could lead to further attempts to glean your personal details, such as the confirmation of DOB. • Verify with Financial Institutions: If you are concerned about your accounts, use contact details from your bank’s official website or your bank statements to reach out rather than using numbers provided in the messages.
  • Report the Scam: Report any suspicious calls or messages to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) or your local authorities to assist in combatting these malicious attempts.

Scam. They knew my bank and where I had been shopping so that they could make it seem real. There seems to be a great deal of ignorance about how scammers target particular accounts and people. They are definitely getting inside information from Australian banking institutions from people who work there. How else would they know all this before any information is given over?

"Hi there, your Debit-Credit Card is restricted due to an unexpected charge of $300 on JB HIFI. Contact us immediately on 0280816175 if you didn't make this payment."

Checked my banking app, no charge. Then looked up number here, confirmed dodgy.

Don't call/text back, I've heard scammers send these texts to see who will respond/engage then they target with the real scam.

Call you bank using the number on your card for example.

Stsy safe peeps.
