The Nature of the Scam

Received the same call. First one from an Adam Thomas, trying to be very intimidating with his talk of warrants, court orders, jail, repossession of cars houses etc.

Asked why there had been no previous written correspondence, before the call. Response was we don't do that.

Asked for the claimed amount owing to be deposited into the "ATO" bank account.

Few weeks later call from a Mike Taylor, "badge number 8460", same story, same threats, but now the home line was monitored by the federal police. Reason given...trying to avoid his partners calls.

Asked again re no written correspondence before the call. He replied that they had been to the house 3 times to hand deliver the letter. Asked why. He replied it has confidential information and "ATO" can't just sent it in the mail.

Also reported these incidents to the REAL ATO, police and the phone company. Was advised to note down date and time of received calls if they should call again.

Suspect the number could be a VoIP number which to my understanding can be anywhere outside Sydney area.

This is a scam phone... Person says they are calling from ATO and that you have a warrant issued because you have not paid your taxes correctly. Please do not give any personal details to this person. The person gives a so called employee number and says he is working in head office of ATO in Sydney. I have lodged a complaint with the tax department regarding this fraud call...

I called the scammer back. I said that I had a missed call from this number. He again identified himself as Alan Foster, ATO. He asked me for my name and I said "Ling". He then asked for my first name. I said "Jinga". There was a bit of a pause. Then he hung up the phone.

I received the same call and when asked they gave this same number. I am on the phone to the ATO and they have confirmed that this is a scam. The details:

1. The person on the line identifies themselves as calling from the ATO.

2. Says that they are calling in relation to Case ID XXXXXX.

3. Pretends to transfer the call to the case officer.

4. Case Officer identifies himself as Alan Forster/Foster and gives me a staff number.

5. I ask for phone no to call back on.

I call the ATO to confirm on the published 13XXXX number on their website. Get informed that it is a scam.

I call the number back and its the same person "Alan Foster" only this time he gives me a different staff number. When I ask him about the different staff numbers he gets defensive and abusive.

DEFINITELY A SCAM. DO NOT GIVE YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS. IF IN DOUBT, CALL THE ATO ON THEIR PROPER NUMBER TO CONFIRM.

Hi,

This number has called my client and they said they were calling from ATO. They informed my client that they have criminal charges and outstanding tax. I called to find out more details but they hanged up the phone. I am a tax agent.
