Beware of the phone number 02 8091 0736, reported as a scam. This number impersonates the Australian Taxation Office and uses threats of legal action to intimidate. Here's how to handle calls from it.

Understanding the Threat of 02 8091 0736

The phone number 02 8091 0736 / 0280910736 has been flagged by numerous users as a fraudulent caller, masquerading as a representative from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This alarming trend of identity theft aims to deceive unsuspecting individuals by employing aggressive tactics such as threats of lawsuits and arrest warrants.

Classification: Scam

Based on user reviews, this number is classified as a scam. The reports indicate that the caller employs a robotic voice and makes false assertions regarding a lawsuit against the recipient. Such tactics are typical of scammers trying to evoke panic and urgency, encouraging victims to respond quickly without verifying the authenticity of the call.

How the Scam Works

  • The caller claims to represent the ATO and informs the victim of legal issues under their name.
  • A computer-generated voice leaves voicemails and induces fear by stating that an arrest warrant will be issued if the recipient does not return the call.
  • When contacted back, the scammers often hang up after requiring identification or details from the recipient to maintain their misleading act.

Recommendations: Stay Safe

If you receive a call from this number, it's crucial to take a step back and evaluate the situation. Here are some practical steps to follow:

  • Do not engage with the caller: Hang up immediately if you receive a call from this number.
  • Do not provide personal information: Legitimate organisations, including the ATO, will never ask for sensitive information over the phone.
  • Block the number: Use your phone's features to block future calls from 02 8091 0736 / 0280910736.
  • Report the number: Inform the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) and the ATO about the scam.

Conclusion

Always stay vigilant and informed. If you think you've been targeted by a scam, remember that Reverseau and Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can help verify unknown callers. Ensure you are not caught off guard by fraudulent activities. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true or sounds threatening, it probably is.

I had a missed call from this number and when I called back a man answered very fast and did not provide a name but advised he was from Australian Taxation Office and when I asked for a name he hung up.. I then tried calling back and the line was continuously busy and I received a voicemail from a computer generated voice that did not provide any details (company name, caller name, my name, reference number etc) but stated the reason of the call was because there was a lawsuit being filed under my name and the moment I received the message I was to call them back on the same number and if I failed to do so an arrest warrant would be issued..
