    Left a demanding message on my elderly mum's messagebank. Said that this time she was calling from the Department of Information, no such department. "If you don't reply you will be up for all legal charges" Said my mothers first name too. Thankfully my Mum now tells me about these calls, as one received said that her bank account had been reduced to 0. Mongrels.

    I received a voicemail message this morning, very assertive 30'ish female Indian voice. Please note the language used was not Australian English - it was structured in a 'back the front' expression. ].

    This is an important and time sensitive message in this regard. Do not disregard this message. There is a very serious case against you and you are to call me on reachme number 02 8073 0518 [slight stumble of pace half way through phone number announcement exactly as if reading from a script].

    I will repeat my number again 02 8073 0518. Again this matter is very serious against you and if you do nothing you will be responsible for all the legal costs and consequences. [ Please note, there was no identifying person name or organisation - so it was a clear hoaxer ].

    We are on the DNC register.

    Call went to our voicemail and its Cleary a recording because it started talking while the message was still playing.

    Came up as an "Overseas" private number so didn't answer thankfully.

    Scammer threatening legal action from the ATO saying they will come after us and we will be responsible for every cent.

    Scum of the earth. I hope no one falls victim to them.

    The woman who called us claimed to be from the ato and she also claimed there was legal action pending regarding our tax claims and that if we did not ring her back all costs from the legal would have to be paid by us. Am so sick to death of the scum that's able to use our phone lines to try to scare and intimidate us.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
