PayPal Impersonation Scam Reports for 02 8053 7989

Two contributors have reported a coordinated PayPal impersonation scam involving 02 8053 7989 (also written as 0280537989). The scam operates via fraudulent email invoices claiming unauthorised MacBook Pro purchases totalling between $1824 and $1855 AUD, with instructions to call 0280537989 immediately if the transaction was not authorised. The fraudulent emails include the recipient's full name, email address, and home address, creating a convincing false sense of urgency and legitimacy.

Both reports about 02 8053 7989 indicate the scammers are using impersonation tactics to pose as PayPal customer service. One contributor received an invoice from an email account joy2526002@gmail.com with the sender name "Ethan Lawson", while another report describes an invoice claiming the payment had already been deducted from a PayPal account the victim does not actually possess. The presence of personal information in the fake invoices suggests data harvesting or breach activity feeding into this campaign.

One contributor who answered a call from 0280537989 reported the caller showed "genuine" behaviour and helped cancel the fraudulent order without any funds being deducted, indicating the scam may involve multiple contact attempts or varying scripts depending on victim response.

Callers representing 02 8053 7989 are posing as PayPal support staff responding to alleged unauthorised transactions. The specific claims include:

  • A MacBook Pro or similar high-value device has been purchased without authorisation
  • The payment has been processed or is pending immediate deduction from the victim's PayPal account
  • Immediate callback to 0280537989 is required to "verify" or "cancel" the transaction
  • The victim's personal information (name, address, email) is already on file with PayPal

The urgency tactic is central to the 02 8053 7989 scam. Contributors report the emails frame the situation as requiring immediate action to prevent financial loss, with language suggesting the transaction will complete unless the victim acts quickly. The callback request to 0280537989 is designed to establish direct contact where scammers can further manipulate the victim into revealing account details, security codes, or payment information.

Report Patterns and Timing

The campaign involving 0280537989 appears active in early December 2025, with reports submitted on 3 December and 6-7 December. The scam uses multiple channels simultaneously: fraudulent PayPal-styled emails paired with the phone callback number 02 8053 7989. This multi-channel approach increases the likelihood that victims will contact the scammers, as they may be more inclined to trust a phone number appearing on an official-looking invoice.

One contributor noted receiving the fake PayPal invoice on 7 December 2025, describing it as "scary stuff" due to the inclusion of accurate personal details. Another contributor confirmed receiving an invoice claiming a MacBook payment from a PayPal account they do not own, indicating the scammers may be casting a wide net with template invoices personalised with harvested data.

The fake PayPal invoice from 02 8053 7989 includes my real name and home address. How did they get this information?

The scammers have harvested your personal data from a data breach, leaked database, or public sources. The inclusion of accurate details in the fake invoice to 0280537989 is intentional - it creates false legitimacy and makes the scam more convincing. This does not mean your PayPal account is compromised, but it does indicate your information is circulating in scam networks. Change your passwords, enable two-factor authentication on PayPal and email accounts, and monitor financial statements.

What should I do if I already called 02 8053 7989 back and spoke to someone?

If you called 0280537989 and provided any account details, passwords, security codes, or payment information, take immediate action: change your PayPal password and email password, contact PayPal and your bank to report potential fraud, monitor your accounts for unauthorised transactions, and consider placing a fraud alert with credit reporting agencies.
