    This Kevin Shaw or Short? A message on my home phone and told me that I had a legal petition against me for tax evasion and fraud? Didn't address me by name, insisted I call this 02 8015 2967 by 4pm, and sounded quite dodgy, finishing with " have a nice day".

    I came home today (4th may) to an aggressive phone call from kevin short saying I was in trouble for tax evasion and there was a warrant for my arrest- the idiot left his number which I googled and found all of these comments. I have recorded the message on my smart phone and will be going to the police and calling the ATO tomorrow- cant believe there are low life scum like this on our planet. This is scam- may he burn in hell.

    We had the same aggressive message left on our answering machine as described in other posts from a Kevin Shaw claiming to be from the ATO. So I called the number from my mobile with the Caller ID blocked. A male with an Indian sounding accent (different to the voice in the message which sounded kind of South African) who had the balls to answer the phone "Hello this is the ATO". I advised that I had a message left asking me to call my number. He then asked for my name, and I made one up. He then went off on this crazy tangent telling me "first you called me Jerome, now you're calling me, can you stop calling me". I replied "I said was my name, I know what you guys are doing, you're full of sh! T and it's all over the internet".

    Does anyone know if this is worth reporting to the police? I'm worried some people wouldn't think to check on the internet and may fall for this scam.

    Received a message today 4/05/2015..sounded like an automated message and is quite concerning as they stated that they had a legal case against me that I had committed tax evasion and tax fraud..(which is obviously wrong) and if I was not prepared to pay the fine legal actions would be taken against me such as a warrant issued in my name by today. It is quite confronting especially if you are not unaware that this is a scam.

    I have been receiving these phone calls for the past week I hang up or put my answering machine on silent.

    Today at 2.45pm 1/5/15 this Kevin Shaw left a message and it is very threatening I'm not happy about this, I care for my elderly father and don't want him to have to deal with this. What can we do.

    Spoke with ATO- they do make calls, but are specific regarding the account they are referring to and give 2 business days for the person to get back to them. I have the Kevin Shaw message on my answering machine and it is very threatening. I'm sure I would have felt quite intimidated if I had answered the call. Older, vulnerable folk even more so. The quality of the call and the Asian accent suggest overseas, which probably means our federal Police fraud squad can't do a lot.

    I had the same hoax all from this number from "Brian O'Conner". Threats regarding arrest warrant for tax evasion and fraud. I had him on my mobile phone, so drove to the police station, and handed the phone over to the police officer. "Brian" did not want to talk much after that and finished with one final threat to me before hanging up.

    A client called our office confirming she had received a call from a man claiming to be from the tax office and that she was being threatened with legal active for tax evasion and fraud. She is an elderly lady but aware it was a scam. She's reported to the police - nothing they can do. She said she'd hang up next time. Any ideas on how we can stop them from calling her; she's also worried about other elderly being frightened and continuing to communicate with them.

    Yes I got the same call on Friday afternoon but seeing as how I was away didn't here it until yesterday, what a shame I wasn't home love getting my own back on these callers.

    Good to see that I'm not the only one now although it did smell of fishy calling as he did not give any details of who he was looking for, plus the Tax Office would never announce in advance that they were looking for you with a warrant regarding Tax Fraud.

    Hi,

    It is a scam so please ignore it. If the ATO wants to investigate on your tax affairs, they would send a written letter to your address stating that they wish to audit/investigate further on your tax returns for whichever relevant year. If you receive this call, please ignore it and never ever give out your banking/credit card/TFN details. The ATO would never call and notify you of tax fraud or tax evasion. FYI I am a tax accountant and some of my clients has received the same call.

    I am a registered tax agent in suburban Brisbane and within 2 hours I have had 2 frantic calls from clients advising that the ATO have called and left messages of fraud.

    I can categorically advise that the ATO would not call in such a manner and leave messages nor identify themselves correctly and they would definitely not say that the matter is regarding fraud.

    The ATO would in fact give you written notice of intention to audit and request documentation, generally bypassing the client and contacting the relevant tax agent. The matter is dealt with professionally not by means of bullying tactics to call them back on a number 02 8015 2967 and not supply a reference.

    These are scam calls, intention for them is unknown but I will be reporting the matter to the ATO immediately.

As an accountant who regularly is in contact with the ATO, I know that I have not committed an offence, and that this is not the way the ATO would contact someone. Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
