    Received an email from "PayPal" saying I had purcahsed $1, 036 worth of BitCoin with payment from PayPal. The email said "If you have any questions, contact our customer support (02) 8011 3786". It wasn't even a decent copy of a PayPal email. And PayPal don't sell BitCoin.

    Scammer called saying they were from Optus and were giving me a 40% discount on my account. Sent an SMS with a 6 digit code that they wanted me to give to access my account to apply discount. Gave them incorrect code and she got cranky and said it wasn’t the right code. I laughed and asked her for my account details and she hung up.

    Said they were from Telstra and wanted to confirm my Telstra details so they could apply a 40% discount. Hung up when I said “Your not from Telstra are you?”

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
