Identifying the Scam: 02 8007 4843

The phone number 02 8007 4843 / 0280074843 has been reported as a scam, particularly noted for its disturbing messages threatening individuals with immediate legal action from the Federal Police due to alleged tax fraud with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). This kind of malicious activity preys on the vulnerability of individuals, especially the elderly or those unfamiliar with such fraudulent tactics.

Understanding the Scam

Scammers often use tactics that exploit the fear of legal consequences to manipulate their targets into taking impulsive actions. In this case, callers receive an automated message threatening the issuance of a warrant for tax fraud unless they press a specific number to speak with someone. These threats are entirely unfounded and are a common strategy employed by scammers to create panic and urgency.

Recognising the Red Flags

  • Automated Messages: Legitimate organisations, such as the ATO or Federal Police, do not initiate contact via robotic recordings that threaten legal action.
  • Pressure to Act: Scammers often push individuals to respond immediately, heightening anxiety and lowering the likelihood of a rational decision.
  • Unknown Numbers: If you receive a call from a number you do not recognise, particularly one that appears in the spam category, exercise caution.

What to Do if You Receive a Call from 02 8007 4843

If you happen to receive a call from this number, it is crucial to remain calm and avoid engaging with the caller or pressing any numbers as instructed. Instead, hang up immediately. To ensure your peace of mind and security, consider performing a Reverse Phone Lookup in Australia using services like Reverseau to verify any suspicious numbers. Moreover, report the incident to the appropriate authorities, such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), to help combat these scams.

This number is a scam recorded message threatening immediate Federal police warrant being issued for ATO tax fraud unless you press 1 after the tone. Pretty funny in how ridiculous it is, but I can imagine how it could scare elderly people or people who don't realise that there are such disgusting people put there who would try this criminal stunt.
