    Scam. Caller (recorded message in English but syntax suggests Russian or Chinese or similar) claims to have launched an investigation into the person contacted and their family. Further claims that a law suit has been commenced against the person called. Provides zero details but says that, in order to obtain further information, the recipient can telephone 280069052. Not on your life!

    I called this number and was advised it was a NSW ATO tax department. ATO don't answer calls without going through a recorded message system. I highly suspect scam.

    Scammer about some personal Australian Tax Number trouble, calling as pre-recording voicemail and asking to call back the same number to sort it out!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
