    These people phoned today saying they will refund me $7.268 from the federal government reclaim department but only if I pay $248 to Australia post for legal fees. Told them to send the cheque less this amount surprise they won't do this. A total scam. They will ring from a private number first then ask you to phone 02 8006 8345 to speak to John Douglas or Keith franklin. Don't give them anything.

    Today relative received a call from "the Australian government" advising that you will receive a $7.000 refund because you have been over charged over the past 3 years.

    Then they gave her a number 02 8006 8345 to ring with a reference number tonight.

    I received this call today. They asked me to confirm my address and surname, to which I replied "Don't you already have that on your screen?" And yes, she did. Wanted me to ring with a reference no to this number and speak with her manager to get a cheque. Sounds like a scam.

    I got the same thing and sounds like a scam to me... I have never heard of the government refunding money from over charged products.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
