Understanding the Frequent Reports of 02 8006 7711
The phone number 02 8006 7711 / 0280067711 has raised significant suspicion among Australian users, primarily because it has been reported as a scam involving impersonation of Australian Government officials. Customers have described experiences that often begin with promising rebates and financial compensation linked to overcharges on bank accounts, creating a sense of urgency and legitimacy. However, the underlying intention seems to be much more nefarious: personal data collection and potential fraud.
Type of Scam: Government Impersonation
Victims typically recount receiving calls from individuals claiming to represent the Australian Government, frequently citing fictitious rebates owed to them. The calls originated from those with heavy accents, posing as representatives with names designed to sound credible. For instance, the callers request sensitive information like dates of birth under the guise of verifying personal details. Despite their fabricated narratives, the callers become evasive or terminate the conversation when questioned further, indicating potential deceit.
Why You Should Be Concerned
Crucially, the anonymity and vague nature of the so-called rebates raise red flags. Legitimate governmental organisations do not operate in such manners; they do not request sensitive information via unverified calls. Truly worrying is the tactic where callers ask for a return call to a different number, creating a cycle of further vulnerability for the recipient. This manipulation may allow scammers to reroute unsuspecting individuals into more elaborate scams.

Caller claiming to be from the Australian Government but won't state which department. Advised that I am eligible for a rebate from Government ($7k) due to overcharges on bank accounts, prompt payment of utility bills, etc. Asked to confirm date of birth and instructed me to call this number and quote an Applicatin Code number. Gave her two 'manager's' names. I believe this to be a scam.
