The number 02 8006 7148 / 0280067148 has emerged as a commonly reported phone number in Australia, predominantly associated with scamming attempts. Users have consistently identified this number as a fraudulent caller claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

Classification: Scam and What to Expect

The reports suggest that this phone number is a part of an elaborate scam scheme. The calls typically feature a robotic or heavily accented voice threatening individuals with arrest warrants or legal action due to alleged outstanding debts to the ATO. This strategy aims to instill fear and incite urgency, compelling recipients to provide personal information or financial details.

Common Scenarios Reported

Victims shared alarming voicemail messages describing how they must immediately return the call or face severe legal repercussions. In many reports, recipients are told absurd amounts, such as an outstanding tax debt of $95,000, and are threatened with physical visits from law enforcement if they fail to comply. Notably, the impostors often hang up when queried about their legitimacy, further underscoring the fraudulent nature of these calls.

ATO scam call, they claimed I had an outstanding tax debt of $95.000 and that the federal police currently have a warrant for my arrest. The second I asked "how do I really know this is the ATO" the Indian guy said he's sending police to my door.

Do not under any circumstances give these people any more personal information than your name.

Apparently there has been a legal case made in my name and if I don't get back to them they will put a warrant out for my arrest. The voice is one of those computer voices. Scam but gave me a good giggle.

They left a message saying I have a law suit pending and to call their number immediatley. They did not identify themselves as being from any particular place. Returned the call, an Asian female said she was from the Taxation department. I asked who and where she was and she hung up. Several calls later to the number resulted in the female person hanging up immediately. A scam for voice recording? Tax dept requests you identify yourself by voice. This person did not, just hung up.
