Identifying the Scam Behind 02 8006 5091

The phone number 02 8006 5091 / 0280065091 has repeatedly appeared in user reports, revealing its true nature as a scam claiming to represent Telstra, Australia's leading telecommunications company. Despite the various names used by the callers, such as Sam Wilson, Jessica, and Louis Smith, the common thread throughout these calls is an attempt to elicit private information under the guise of urgent internet support.

Common Patterns in User Reports

Users have reported receiving calls from this number where the caller claims there's a critical issue with their internet services. They often state that the household's broadband will be disconnected due to an alleged unsafe website, prompting victims to provide remote access to their computers. However, further investigations reveal that many users did not even have accounts with Telstra, leading to suspicions about the legitimacy of the calls.

How to Handle Calls from This Number

  • Stay Calm and Don’t Engage: If you receive a call from this number, do not provide any personal information or allow remote access to your device.
  • Verify Caller Identity: Politely ask for verification credentials or a reference number. Genuine service representatives will provide this information without hesitation.
  • Hang Up and Report: If you suspect it's a scam, hang up and report the number to Australian authorities or your telecommunications provider. This can help prevent others from falling victim to scams.

Conclusion

It is clear from user experiences that the number 02 8006 5091 / 0280065091 is not connected to Telstra. Instead, it represents a calculated attempt at fraud that has persisted since at least 2015. By staying informed and cautious, you can protect yourself from these types of scams. Had the same thing today from a 'Peter Williams' (Indian accent) from Telstra (our provider) telling my mum that our PC was full of bugs and viruses and she needed to download a program (TeamViewer) to fix it. Unbeknown to her that it was 100% shonky. She proceeded and he needed a password that had popped up on the download screen and upon giving it to him he yelled at her saying it was the wrong password. At this point I had come home from work not knowing what had happened. And when I took over the phone and pulled him up on it being a scam he yelled at me and gave me this phone number to prove that he is from Telstra. Unbelievable that this is still happening in 2015.

"Louie Smith" from telstra called our business number and said we are sending spam and needed remote access to our computers.

He left this phone number to call back. We got our IT guy to call and it just goes to voice mail.

We contacted telstra and they have advised us it appears to have been a scam.

Do not let these scammers access your network!!

Had a call from this number today which I believe to be a scam. I pressed the woman (Nancy) for a Telstra ID number which she gave me but I have my doubts it is real. She said there were problems with my internet connection and she would help me repair the problem. She couldn't give me the christian name of the account holder so which I'm pretty sure this is a scam.

Received a call from this number today from a Louis Smith (strange name for an Indian man). He claimed to be from Telstra and wanted to go through a step by step process on my PC to repair a bugged internet connection.

My account is with Optus and when he could not verify the call or explain why my provider had no contacted me to advise of this very serious issue, I hung up. He called back almost immediately asking why I had hung up, when I explained that I thought his call was a scam he gave me a phone number, employee ID number.

I called Telstra who have confirmed that this is not a Telstra number and they had not made any calls to my landline. I have reported this number to Telstra. DO NOT take calls from this number.
