In the ever-evolving landscape of scams, 02 8006 4226 / 0280064226 has emerged as a notorious number reported by numerous concerned Australians. Users have indicated that this number is linked to a fraudulent operation claiming to be the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). What Users Are Experiencing
The reports, predominantly from 21 November 2018, reveal a consistent theme: individuals are being contacted by an automated voice message alleging that a lawsuit has been filed under their name for intentional fraud. This tactic is designed to instil fear and urgency in victims, prompting them to call back and divulge personal information.
- Recorded Messages: Call recipients report receiving computer-generated messages claiming they are under investigation by the ATO, a clear indication of a scam.
- Impersonation Tactics: Some users who called back mentioned speaking with someone who poorly impersonated ATO staff, typically leading to a disconnection when pressed for further details.
- Manipulative Script: The use of scare tactics, such as claiming continuous attempts to reach you, is a common tactic employed by scammers to create panic.
How to Respond
Recognising a scam is the first step. Here are effective ways to handle calls from suspicious numbers such as 02 8006 4226:
- Do Not Engage: If you do receive a call, do not engage with the automated system or respond to prompts. Hang up immediately.
- Verify Independently: Transparency is key. If you have concerns about your tax status, directly contact the ATO through their official channels rather than responding to callers.
- Report the Scam: Consider reporting the number to authorities like Scamwatch or the Australian Cyber Security Centre to assist in tackling these scams.

What Our Users Reviewed
Computer generated voice saying 'you and your family being investigated, fraud blah blah' Scum. Sorry, meant scam.
Scam.....tax fraud etc... They even had the audacity to leave a message.
Received a voice message from this number also advising of lawsuit being filed and myself and my family are being investigated. They claimed to have tried to make contact several times prior.
Sounded like a pre-recorded message/robot.
Appears to be spam and trying to scare people into giving personal details.
This is a definite scam, I received a call which was a recording supposedly from the Australian Taxation office to say I was under investigation. I knew it was a scam because the taxation dept don’t communicate in this way.. To save everybody’s time I made the call. Some silly Indian woman who struggled to speak English answered the phone as the Australian Taxation Office, however when I pressed her for a locatiion the line was cut and despite further attempts the call would not be answered. Don’t waste your time with these pathetic uneducated, unimaginative fools.
I got the same call about an hour ago and then I got the voice message saying the same thing- probably a scam.
Just received a recorded message "from the ATO" saying there's a lawsuit etc and to call back on this number. Clearly a scam.
Scam number, be careful. Just called them back and they claimed to be the ATO Fraud department. When I asked for help, they hang up.
I was called by this number and a voice message was left stating that a lawsuit has been filed under my name, accusing me of intentional fraud???
