    Just had this 'Mark Ray' call me as well offering to show me something on my computer because apparently 'Telstra' saw something in the logs. When I told him that I didn't have a windows computer in my household he hung up.

    The trick for dealing with these idiot scammers next time, say "I use a Mac".

    My grandfather had a call from "James Hunt" from Telstra about his computer behaving "oddly". Interestingly, his computer is currently not on the Internet and is with a different ISP anyway. My grandfather said he'd get me to call back (since I'm his tech support :D) and this was the number given.

    Clearly, I'm not going to call.

    Same as you guys I had a call from this John wright with a thick Indian accent and gave me all the details mentioned above, same ploy. I told him to stop doing disservice to his country and find a decent job that will make his country proud of him rather than dealing in some nefarious activities that will make his fellow Indians disown him. He's very aggressive too.

    I too received a call from "Kevin" (heavy Indian accent and call centre background noise) about needing to disconnect our Telstra account due to computer infection problems- said he was on the technical team. Instantly suspicious, I queried why he was ringing as this was the first news of any problem. Asked for a call back number (which was 02 80060502) to verify this as actually Telstra then Googled the number and found this website. I rang Telstra to query if this was a known scam - it is! The call back number is not the number they are calling from but Telstra indicated they are investigating.

    Received a call from "Kevin" a Senior Technician from Telstra. He quoted his reference as D650120 and when I queried why he was calling me and how he would know that I have been hacked he told me to call 02 80060502 as well as email support@telstra.com.au.

    I worked in IT for over 40 years and can smell a rat and know how these vermin operate. I told him that he could call me back tomorrow as I was too busy to deal with him right then. He was very hard to understand as he had a thick indian accent.

    I will be trying a little reverse work on him when he calls back and can hopefully inform Telstra some solid details to stop this moron.

    The person who called me had a Caucasian name (Paul Martin) for a person with such a heavy Indian accent. DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICES. Those so called Telstra support people, once they convince you your computer has been infected and need a fixing, you've fallen for the trick. Pretty soon, they start controlling your computer and you'll be giving them your personal and bank details. Had to lock my bank account because of these dirty scammers.

    Well, John is an active hacker! My quite upset mother just called to inform me that "John, ID D79030T" had contacted her. Threatened to terminate her landline and internet connection unless an immediate payment was made due to alleged hacking activities. As my mother was non-compliant, he provided an additional number - 0280060502 - with which she was connected. The same instruction was reiterated with some element of intimidation. The demand in this case was payment by credit card of $250.00. for reasons which were totally inexplicable.

    Fortunately, she called me and I have experience with these criminal and fraudulent practices and I could confirm the true nature of the contact. Unfortunately, these unscrupulous and amoral characters do find their vulnerable targets who present with no advocate. So, ignore any such contacts and report them to, in this case, Telstra. Finally be relieved that online services can also perform a pro-active role as evidenced by this site which increases the power of potential victims to protect themselves against such disgusting individuals by acquiring the most potent tool of knowledge.

    Well he must be honing his skills. He called our land line which is a private number and gave me his details 'which I had to write down' John Wright Telstra Id. Code D79030T address 105 Miller Street North Sydney and phone number and also job number 888DCA60 to quote in all future dealings. He advised my internet had been hacked and if I did not follow his instructions (to access my computer) my internet connection would be cancelled for six months. He was also going to wait on the line while I used my mobile to call the number above and verify his identity. Advised him that I did not believe he was who he said and hung up....really......

    Yes a man with a thick Indian accent called me saying his name was John Wright and he was from Telstra. He started ranting on about how there was a hacking event on my computer and demanded me to run a number of commands from the Windows "RUN" dialog box (windows key + "R").

    I immediately thought this was strange as I was with another internet provider and he could any give any specific details of the supposed hack on my computer (not even which computer) but I had to rush to my machine (any machine) and do what he said!

    I asked him to verify his details and he gave me this number (02 8006 0502) which brought me here.

    This is OBVIOUSLY A SCAM! Do not let anyone you don't know tell you what to run on your computer or get any access information.

    Obviously don't call the number he gave, Telstra's number is 132200 and they'll confirm it's bull!

    I got a call from this number today, the caller was annoyed when I had to ask twice for him to speak clearly and slowly because I couldn't understand him. He insisted my computer was being hacked but baulked at giving me a number. He gave me "a Telstra operator ID" (#D650120) and was cranky that I questioned him again and would not turn on my computer for him. Obviously a scam.

    We received multiple calls from this number telling us that they were from Telstra and we had to urgently help them stop hackers from getting into our system (they wanted remote access to our computers). They gave me this number to ring them back on and provided Telstra Employee ID number. It's a scam!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
