    Just received a call from 02 800 58583 informing me that me internet access would be cut off tonight because of attempted illegal access. The whole pitch was so plausible, and a quick bit of work wioth my computer would solves the problem. A quick call to Telstra confirmed no such activity. I called the number that I had been given and it was answered. Indian voice noise in the background but a very good attempt at a scam.

    An Indian accented person called to say there had been illegal access to our internet from overseas. They wanted my mum to check. She asked how was she supposed to do that from the phone. She then played dumb thinking this was a scammer. They asked her to list the items that use the internet in the house. She just said she didn't know has she was just dog sitting. They gave her the phone number and a reference number for her to call back.

    Do not give them information.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
