Uncovering 02 8005 6926: A Comprehensive Guide to the ATO Scam

If you’ve received a call from 02 8005 6926 / 0280056926, it’s crucial to be informed about this number, which has been widely reported as a scam. Many users have identified this number as part of a deceptive operation impersonating the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), attempting to instill fear and obtain personal information under the guise of legal action.

How the Scam Works

Reports detail that calls from this number typically start with the sound of music, which is often a precursor to an automated message claiming there is a warrant for the recipient’s arrest due to tax evasion. Following this, callers are instructed to press '1' to connect with someone who purports to be an ATO agent.

On connecting, victims encounter representatives with heavy accents—many reviewers have noted this detail—and are presented with alarming claims regarding legal repercussions, including non-bailable arrest warrants (a term that is not legally applicable in Australia). This tactic is clearly designed to create panic and compel individuals to divulge sensitive personal details.

User Experiences

  • Claim of Legal Threat: Users were told they face significant legal action without substantiation, provoking immediate distress.
  • Unusual Call Patterns: Many have reported receiving calls only to be met with silence or hang-ups, raising further suspicion about the legitimacy of these calls.
  • Experience of Distress: Several victims felt threatened enough to relay personal information to the scammers before realising the call was fraudulent.

This is the fake ATO number. At first there will be an automated message informing you that there has been a warrant issued on your name and to talk to the representative, press 1.

Once you press 1, someone from an Indian call centre(I am an Indian and can very well get the accent) will introduce himself as an ATO agent and will try to scare you.

He said that a case has been issues against me in Commonwealth court, when I asked him the address of the court, he got pissed off and disconnected himself ..
