Unmasking the Scam: 02 8005 4877

The phone number 02 8005 4877 / 0280054877 has been reported extensively by users as a deceitful scam operation impersonating the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Many individuals have received alarming automated calls, falsely notifying them of legal actions and potential arrest. This type of scam exploits anxiety, leveraging threats to coerce unsuspecting victims into returning calls, ultimately leading to financial loss.

Nature of the Scam

The reviews uniformly describe a scenario in which the caller claims there is a lawsuit pending against the recipient, backed by intimidating language suggesting they will be arrested if they do not respond. These calls typically involve pre-recorded messages, often featuring an American accent, which is a telltale sign that the operation is fraudulent. Given that the ATO does not use automated systems for serious legal notifications, the legitimacy of such claims is immediately questionable.

Understanding the Risks

  • Emotional Manipulation: The accusations of legal consequences evoke fear, prompting individuals to react impulsively.
  • Financial Implications: Some reports suggest that calling back can lead to high phone bills, thus highlighting financial risk.
  • Password and Identity Theft: Responding can potentially expose sensitive personal information to scammers.

How to Handle Calls from 02 8005 4877

If you receive a call from this number, here are steps you should take:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid answering the call or responding to any voicemails. Legitimate agencies will not demand personal information in such a manner.
  • Block the Number: Utilize your phone's features to block further communication from this number.
  • Report the Call: Inform the appropriate authorities, including local consumer protection agencies and the ATO, to assist in their efforts to combat such fraud.
  • Educate Others: Share your experience to help friends and family remain vigilant against similar scams.

These rat cunts left a voicemail saying that if I didn’t return their call that they’d have to issue arrest warrants for me. So I rang them back. It took about 10 attempts but eventually Officer Johnson from the investigations division answered the phone. Officer Johnson has an Indian accent. I asked Johnson which police force he was from in Australia and he repeated “the investigations division”. I asked if they were a legitimate law enforcement agency and if he was calling from Sydney or the sub continent via a spam number. He then told me that he couldn’t hear me and hung up. So I spent the next 3 hours just continually calling the number back, but it would either ring out or have a busy signal. The only reason I stoped ringing was because my phone battery died. If these crooks ring you, call them back and harass the hell out of them.

Got an automatic message from 02 80054877 saying that I have a claim being filed against me and that if I don't call them back they will have me arrested. It would be funny, except for the fact that if someone does fall for it and call back, they will have a massive phone bill next month. That's how they get your money. DO NOT call back, I sure as hell won't be.
