PayPal Impersonation Scam Reports for 02 7259 4840

A contributor has flagged 02 7259 4840 (also written as 0272594840) for involvement in a PayPal impersonation scam. The scam begins with an unsolicited email claiming that a charge of several thousand dollars will be applied to a PayPal account for a cancelled meeting booking. The email then directs recipients to call 02 7259 4840 to dispute the charge.

The contributor identified multiple red flags in the scheme targeting 0272594840. The email contained numerous grammatical errors, the recipient confirmed they do not actually have a PayPal account, and the charge itself was unreasonably high for a single cancelled meeting. These inconsistencies suggest the email and associated phone number 02 7259 4840 are part of a coordinated callback lure designed to extract personal information.

How the Scam Works with 02 7259 4840

This particular callback scam follows a predictable pattern. The attacker sends a fraudulent billing notice via email to create urgency and concern. By directing victims to call 02 7259 4840, the scammer positions themselves to receive the call directly, allowing them to impersonate PayPal support staff and request sensitive details such as account credentials, payment card information, or other personal data.

The use of impersonation combined with a payment request makes this tactic particularly effective against anxious recipients who believe they are about to lose money. The contributor who reported 02 7259 4840 demonstrated strong critical thinking by verifying that they do not hold a PayPal account before engaging further.

Phone number was on an unsolicited email advising that a couple of thousand dollars was going to be charged to my PayPal account for a meeting booking that I did not attend!! The email went to advise that if I had any concerns to call the above phone number.

I noted that a) email was full of grammatical errors b) I don't have a PayPal account c) the number is hosted by a carrier that has faced regulatory action for faliling to report and share scam information d) a cancelled meeting incurring an over the top charge - all point to an attempt to get me to call to provide personal details. I call this out as a SCAMMER!!!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a scammer send a fake PayPal email directing me to call 02 7259 4840?

Scammers use callback lure tactics to bypass digital defences. By sending a fraudulent billing email and directing you to call 02 7259 4840, they gain direct voice contact where they can impersonate PayPal support staff and extract sensitive information like account credentials or payment card details. The false urgency of a pending charge increases the likelihood you will call without verifying.

Is 02 7259 4840 a real PayPal customer service number?

No. PayPal customer service numbers are published on the official PayPal website. If you receive an email claiming to be from PayPal and directing you to call 02 7259 4840, it is fraudulent. The contributor who reported 02 7259 4840 identified several red flags in the email before engaging with the number.

What should I do if I already called 02 7259 4840 and gave information?

Contact PayPal immediately through the official PayPal website or app and report the incident. Monitor your financial accounts closely for unauthorised activity. If you provided payment card details, contact your bank. Report the phone number 02 7259 4840 to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au).

How can I tell if a PayPal email is genuine before calling 02 7259 4840 or any other number?

Legitimate PayPal emails do not contain grammatical errors, do not demand immediate payment to avoid a charge, and do not direct you to call a phone number to resolve billing issues. Instead, log into your PayPal account directly through the official website to check for notifications. If you are unsure, contact PayPal through the number listed on their official website, not the number in the email.

Why was the contributor confident that 02 7259 4840 was a scam?

The contributor identified multiple inconsistencies. They do not have a PayPal account, yet the email claimed a charge would be applied to one. The charge amount was implausibly high for a single cancelled booking. The email itself contained numerous grammatical errors, which is unusual for official PayPal communications. These factors combined to make it clear that 02 7259 4840 was part of a scam.

Should I block 02 7259 4840 on my phone?

Yes. If you have already received contact associated with 02 7259 4840, blocking the number prevents further contact attempts. However, scammers often use different numbers for repeat contact, so blocking 02 7259 4840 alone may not prevent other scam calls. Report the number to ACMA (acma.gov.au) and Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) to help authorities identify scam patterns.
