Spam and Scam Reports for 02 7241 5853

Two contributors have reported activity from 02 7241 5853 (also written as 0272415853), a NSW-based local service number. The reports indicate a mix of unwanted contact patterns, including a straightforward spam call and a more concerning voicemail message with suspicious characteristics.

One contributor dismissed the call as annoying spam after answering directly. The second report is more troubling: a voicemail was left after the call went unanswered, featuring a female voice speaking in Chinese with partial English translation suggesting a distress scenario. This pattern aligns with known emotional manipulation scams designed to trigger immediate callbacks from concerned recipients.

What Callers from 02 7241 5853 Leave Behind

The voicemail from 0272415853 used an emotional appeal in a non-English language, a known tactic in callback and financial manipulation scams. The message, lasting approximately 18 seconds, was partially translated with phrases suggesting someone in need of help ("daddy I need to eat teach me to..."), deliberately crafted to create urgency and concern in the recipient.

This approach differs from standard telemarketing. Rather than pitching a product or service, the caller from 02 7241 5853 relies on the recipient's emotional response to prompt a callback, where the actual scam mechanics would unfold. Contributors who receive these calls often feel compelled to return the call or provide personal information while seeking to "help" the person in distress.

Report Patterns and Timing

The two reports about 02 7241 5853 arrived months apart, with the voicemail incident occurring in March 2025. The spacing between reports suggests intermittent rather than continuous calling, though the lack of recent volume data means activity patterns remain unclear. One contributor did not answer the incoming call from 0272415853, allowing it to ring approximately 6 times before the voicemail was left.

The NSW allocation for this local service number means callers are using infrastructure associated with legitimate service providers, potentially making the number appear less suspicious at first glance. This is a common tactic in scam campaigns that aim to bypass initial call screening based on area code recognition.

What was the voicemail message from 02 7241 5853 trying to achieve?

The voicemail from 0272415853 used emotional manipulation, featuring a distressed voice speaking in Chinese with English phrases suggesting someone needed help with food. This tactic is designed to trigger immediate callbacks from recipients who feel compelled to assist, at which point the scammer can harvest personal information, financial details, or convince the victim to send money. Contributors should never callback unknown numbers after such messages.

Is 02 7241 5853 a legitimate NSW business number?

While 02 7241 5853 is allocated as a NSW local service number through Symbio Networks, the reported activity (emotional manipulation voicemail, spam calls) indicates it is being used for scam purposes. Legitimate businesses do not leave distressed voicemails in foreign languages to prompt callbacks. The allocation to a real service provider does not guarantee legitimacy - scammers frequently spoof or misuse legitimate network infrastructure.

What should I do if I already returned a call to 0272415853 and provided information?

If you called back 0272415853 after receiving the voicemail and shared personal, financial, or family information, contact your bank and relevant institutions immediately to report potential fraud. Monitor your accounts for unauthorised activity. You can also report the incident to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au and ACMA at acma.gov.au. If money was transferred, contact your bank's fraud team immediately and consider reporting to local police.

Why would a scammer use a Chinese voicemail message on 02 7241 5853?

Scammers using 0272415853 target specific communities where language-based emotional appeals are more likely to bypass initial suspicion. A voicemail in Chinese with distressed phrasing exploits cultural values around family and obligation.
