No message left, but I’ve got a gut feeling this number screams scam!
“Got a call about some dodgy phone disconnection and passport cancellation scheme – sounded like a total scam to me, mate. Best steer clear of these clowns!”
Yesterday I got a message on my phone (which I'm no longer able to locate) asking me to click on a link. Doing so called the number 02 7240 1560. The person who answered asked me to speak in Chinese (which I know) and proceeded to tell me that my Australian passport was about to be cancelled. Since I am an Australian-born Australian citizen, there was no way that a Chinese-speaking person telling me my Australian passport was about to be cancelled had any credibility. They also told me that the reason was a huge amount of calls (messages) regarding some immigration matter that the Australian immigration authorities had received from some Shanghai mobile number. The more I spoke with them the dodgier it sounded, so I hung up.
I was really puzzled by this call. What sense would there be in getting people to ring a number and be asked to speak Chinese -- most Australians would be unable to respond. That led me to suspect that they had some inside information about Chinese ability and my connections with China -- that is, it is some kind of targeted scam, which was even scarier. At any rate, the whole thing left a very bad taste in my mouth. Whatever you do, don't call this number.
