Understanding the Scam Behind 02 6711 1621

The phone number 02 6711 1621 / 0267111621 has been identified by multiple users as a scam call claiming to be representatives from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP). Scammers are increasingly using official-sounding tactics to instil fear and prompt immediate action from individuals, often asking for personal information or payment.

Nature of the Scam

Reports indicate that the callers typically have a non-native English accent and leave messages stating that the recipient is involved in legal trouble related to tax evasion. Common phrases include urgent warnings not to ignore the call, which is a common method used by scammers to intimidate victims into compliance. Reviewers have mentioned the absence of specific taxpayer information, which is a red flag, as legitimate authorities like the ATO usually communicate through written correspondence rather than phone calls.

Characteristics of the Calls

  • Calls are often received during business hours.
  • Messages typically mention upcoming legal action regarding taxes.
  • Requests for payment may direct victims to purchase iTunes cards—a known tactic for scams.

How to Handle Such Calls

If you receive a call from 02 6711 1621:

  • Do Not Engage: Hang up immediately. Engaging with the caller can lead to further harassment.
  • Block the Number: Add the number to your blocked callers list to prevent future calls.
  • Verify Independently: If the call raises concern, contact the ATO or CDPP directly using official channels to confirm any claims.
  • Report the Scam: Report such calls to Scamwatch or the ATO to assist in tracking and addressing this type of fraud.

Conclusion

As technology evolves, so do the tactics employed by scammers. The number 02 6711 1621 / 0267111621 is part of a concerning trend of fraudulent calls masquerading as legitimate government communications in Australia. Stay informed and vigilant, and remember—if something seems too alarming to be true, it probably is. They eventually ask to cover the regal costs of the case by iTune card purchased at Coles, Woolworth, Harvey Norman and JB Hifi. ATO site has all info about it.

I found a message on my answering machine exactly same as others. It was a recorded male message as representing CDPP about tax evasion. It is so clear that they do not have any information about the tax payer and normally tax office contacts you through letter. I checked my tax online it was all good.

Its a prank call put together by some scum bag claiming to be related to the ATO, my advice is as soon as you get the call, hang up - and if it comes through on yr mobile, add it to your blocked callers list.

Its purely some piece of crap low-life who's ultimate goal is to steal money from you.

Male, with ESL sub continental accent, left message on ACT home ph machine on 7/7/16, business hours, stating they were from/representing "CDPP Commonwealth Director Public prosecutions re a legal case for Australian taxation office for tax evasion & tax avoidance do not ignore this call, phone 02 6711 1621 urgently." They did not state which tax payers they wished to speak with. On checking the reverse number I identified this was likely to be a scam call as to my knowledge the ATO or CDPP does not have or use offices for any aspect of managing ACT returns in northern NSW.

Major scam pretending to be the ATO!! Hang up.

Or do what I do, ring back and give them a serving with whatever comes to mind before they hang up.
