    Got home from work to find a rude message from Kenneth Mathews telling me I was being prosecuted by the ato for tax evasion. Smelt like a rat so rang the ato directly. I'm not being prosecuted for tax evasion and they took all the details of the call including name and number and advised that I not contact them and to ignore any future calls and give them no information should they get through.

    Received a message regarding Tax Evasion and Fraud and that I needed to call Officer Kenneth Matthews back on 02 6698 4021 immediately.

    Knowing this to most likely be a scam, I rang the number back.

    Without giving them any info except for what time the message was left, they were able to tell me my home address and name.

    I questioned them about the 'Tax Evasion / Fraud' matter of which they spoke about only to be hung up on.

    ATO OFFICE regarding tax evasion and prosecution? Tried calling the number and get cut off repeatedly. Our tax accountant takes care of all our taxes and they don't list our private home number. I think it is dodgy.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
