    Received a call from a man with a significant accent advising me that he was from "Coleman's" (indistinguishable)Lawyers and that I was entitled to compensation regarding a car accident I was involved in, in the past two years. I requested the details of the accident because, I informed him, I had been in several (tongue in cheek) and would need clarity. He asked me for my name and address and sounded confused when I asked him how he didn't already know my details if he was actually ringing concerning an accident that directly related to me. Abruptly he hung up.

    I had a call from this number.

    And when I answered.

    I heard a 'click' before a 'foreign' male voice answered 'hello', in response to me.

    While I waited for him to announce who he was,

    He just repeatedly said 'hello',

    Until he hung up the 'phone.

    I have an unlisted (silent) telephone number and I am located within Australia. The caller using the above number to me this evening (excuse me if this seems discriminatory) had a non-Australian accent. So, "Elena from the car accident department," called initially requesting personal information from me. I asked the scammer for her contact number. Promptly, "Elena," stated that I do not have a car, "Is that right?" Actually, I was using the extra time to gather the contact number from my calling number display 'phone. I did not respond to, "Elena," who discontinued the call.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
