Why This Number is Classified as a Scam

Calls falsely representing the ATO are unfortunately common, with scammers using a variety of techniques to deceive individuals. In this case, the user suspected a scam primarily due to the following:

  • Impersonation of a government entity: Scammers often exploit the reputation of reputable organisations like the ATO to gain access to personal information.
  • Pressure tactics: The phrase “last chance” is a classic coercive tactic designed to provoke anxiety and prompt the recipient to act without thinking rationally.
  • Invalid number upon return call: Scammers often use spoofed numbers which can lead to a disconnection or recorded message if you attempt to return their call.

This number called my mobile phone saying it was the last chance to resolve issue with Australian Taxation Office. When I phoned it back, it said the number was invalid, even though this was the number on my screen.

I am certain this is a scam as my taxation is up to date.
