My Indian friend who is an Australian Citizen also just received a call from Border Security.
The man had an Indian accent with the name David Cooper.
They advised that she needed to supply all her details passport/medical (although didn't know it is called Medicare), financial details etc.
She was told not to tell anyone of this conversation as he was trying to help her, she needed to pay to immigration $2000 payable to David Cooper. When she said she had to go to town to withdraw the cash due to withdrawal limits he was prepared to stay on the phone for the hour it would take at the same time offering alternate ways of collecting the money.
When she said she was going to the police to help her execute this process he told her she would be arrested immediately doe to the warrant against her.
One guy called from this number and said they have received complain for me in Australian Immigration. He was asking me for the year of my arrival to confirm. I asked him if you have immigration details then you should know the year. Then he hanged up on me. Truly fake call.
Says I am calling from Australian Immigration and Border Securities (Indian accent) and he is senior Councillor John Smith. Says I haven't done needed paper work while applying Australian Citizenship. And that is considered as fraud and a case has been filled against me. When I asked to send me all documents and case details to my postal address (that's what gov agencies do), he hung up.
This looks like a scam or fake call. Be aware, be safe.
