    Got and call from 02 6188 5627 it played an automated message (slight accent) saying they were from the ATO and that a tax avoidance case against me has been lodged, and that I was to call back immediately.

    I called back, they answered ATO, they wanted my name to 'put me through to the right person'. Didn't give them a thing but questioned their legitimacy, and they hung up. Bloody scammers!

    The sad thing is that this was at my parents' place and they are very old so luckily I answered. My parents would be horrified if someone told them they didn't their pay tax! How many other elderly people out there get these calls, and unaware that it's a scam, they are left frightened and confused.

    *** SCAM ALERT *** This is a callback number that a scammer uses purporting to be from the Australian Taxation Department. He is not! He speaks with a pseudo-American accent. It is a recorded message, as we received 4 calls on our answering machine, and all calls were identical.

    Message: "...Department of Australian Taxation Office. Look the reason of my call, is to let you know that, we have received some illegal condition complaints against your name; illegal claims against your name, concerning some illegal tax evasion; some tax avoidance in the past. Aah, we're about to take this matter to the courthouse, and we're about to issue, a non-bailable arrest warrant concerning you. Before we go and even do that, if you need any further details about this case, or if you need to know exactly what the events are, you can return our call, you can call us back on our callback number which is.02 61885627. I repeat...02 61885627. Again this is Stacin McChoir (???) from Australian Taxation Office. Thank you. You have a great day. Bye bye.".

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
