I think scammers are back at it. The caller had a heavy Asian accent and said they wanted to speak to someone in my household. They even had the correct surname, which made me uneasy, so I hung up.

This is a scammer. The police needs to stop these kind of criminal to keep ripping off good people.
They tried this on with me, but thanks to the comments here, I was able to cut the call in time and tell the scammer to go away.
ATO and all other Government department will never use automated systems to contact people. Any communications from the Australian Government will also include the name of the person they are calling and will always verify the user before discussing the purpose of the call. Sadly these calls will persist for a short while so call your telco provider about how to blacklist the number. Finally, it is illegal to threaten someone with legal action unless all other avenues have been exhausted so ignore these losers.
